MTN Ghana’s Sustainability Week Sparks Renewed Environmental Awareness and Action

MTN Ghana has reinforced its commitment to environmental stewardship with a series of impactful activities marking its 2025 Sustainability Week, highlighted by a major cleanup exercise at the Sakumono Mighty Beach. The week-long celebration, which runs until November 17, is designed to deepen environmental consciousness among staff, partners, and surrounding communities while showcasing MTN’s long-term dedication to sustainable development.
One of the flagship activities was the collaborative cleanup exercise at Sakumono Mighty Beach, undertaken in partnership with McKingTorch Africa and the Buzstop Boys. MTN staff volunteers, together with members of the partner organizations, spent two hours collecting and sorting waste materials, including plastics, footwear, Styrofoam, and fabric. All collected materials were separated for proper recycling to ensure they do not return into the environment.
The once-thriving coastal ecosystem—known for mangroves, sea turtles, and various bird species—has endured years of pollution largely due to poorly managed stormwater drainage in the area. MTN Ghana’s initiative aims to restore the ecological health of the beach, promote responsible waste management, and help revive its tourism appeal. The company says it is committed to maintaining regular cleanup activities while encouraging public participation in preserving Ghana’s natural resources.
As part of its broader Sustainability Week activities, MTN Ghana organized “Lunch and Learn,” “Eco Talk,” and “Bright Conversations”—interactive sessions designed to educate staff and stakeholders on climate action, sustainable corporate practices, and responsible consumption. These engagements created platforms for dialogue on how individuals, companies, and communities can collectively contribute to a cleaner and safer environment.

Sustainability Week aligns with MTN Group’s theme, “Making a Positive Difference to the Environment,” and echoes the United Nations’ 2011 declaration of the “International Year of the Forest,” which calls for global efforts to protect and restore forest and coastal ecosystems. According to MTN Ghana, the observance is not just symbolic but part of an ongoing sustainability journey woven into the company’s Ambition 2025 Strategic Commitment.
In line with its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework, MTN Ghana continues to champion long-term sustainability initiatives across its operations. These include the introduction of eco-friendly biodegradable SIM cards, the adoption of renewable energy solutions—such as solar power at its headquarters—and robust waste reduction and recycling programs. The company also invests in digital innovation and financial inclusion to support Ghana’s sustainable development goals.

MTN Ghana says it will continue to strengthen its partnerships and community-driven initiatives to advance environmental responsibility nationwide. Through consistent action, education, and innovation, the company aims not only to raise awareness but also to inspire collective action toward building a greener Ghana for future generations.
