MTN Ghana Uplifts Katinguli and Baale Schools with Uniforms Under ‘Y’ello Care’ Initiative

In a touching show of corporate responsibility and community engagement, MTN Ghana has donated brand-new school uniforms to pupils of Katinguli RC and Baale LA Primary Schools in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region. This intervention forms part of MTN Ghana’s flagship corporate volunteer program, “21 Days of Y’ello Care,” which is aimed at improving lives in underserved communities across the country.

The 2025 edition of the Y’ello Care initiative is being celebrated under the theme: “Connecting at the Root, Connecting Communities Through the Use of Digital Tools.” While the core of the campaign focuses on digital inclusion and connectivity, MTN Ghana has demonstrated that physical well-being and educational support remain equally critical components of building resilient and thriving communities.

The pupils at both schools, many of whom previously reported to class in tattered or ill-fitting clothes, were visibly overjoyed as they received the new uniforms. Teachers and community members applauded the company for choosing to invest in the future of rural children, many of whom face significant socio-economic challenges.

Addressing the gathering during the presentation, staff from MTN Ghana emphasized the company’s belief that every child deserves the dignity of proper clothing and the opportunity to learn in comfort and confidence.

The headteachers of the two beneficiary schools — Mr. Mohammed Bawa Ziblim of Katinguli RC Primary and Mr. Dauda Shani of Baale LA Primary — expressed deep gratitude for the gesture. According to them, while the uniforms have brought immediate relief and joy, the schools continue to battle more pressing infrastructure issues.

“We are very grateful to MTN Ghana for thinking about our children. But beyond uniforms, we still have pupils learning under trees and temporary shelters that collapse during storms,” Mr. Ziblim explained. “We are appealing to MTN and other stakeholders to support us with permanent classroom blocks.”

Mr. Dauda Shani echoed the plea, noting that teachers and pupils are often demoralized due to the poor learning environment. “When it rains, we cannot hold lessons. The heat and dust also make it difficult for children to concentrate. We need help,” he added.

Mr. Uboi Baabe, a respected community elder, joined the chorus of appreciation and advocacy. “This donation is commendable. It shows MTN Ghana is not only a telecommunications company but a partner in development. We are, however, urging the government and other corporate bodies to follow MTN’s lead and invest in education infrastructure in our rural areas,” he said.

The “21 Days of Y’ello Care” program, launched in 2007, has grown into one of Africa’s most impactful employee volunteer initiatives. MTN employees across the continent dedicate 21 days in June each year to support community projects in health, education, and economic empowerment.

This year’s gesture in Yendi further reinforces MTN Ghana’s commitment to reaching the most remote corners of the country with not only digital access but also tangible support that directly touches lives.

As the company continues its outreach efforts, the pupils of Katinguli and Baale will remember this act of kindness as a symbol of hope — and a call to action for others to join in the transformation of Ghana’s rural education landscape.
