MTN Ghana Sounds Alarm on Cybercrime, Educates Staff at Kumasi Cybersecurity Forum

MTN Ghana has reinforced its commitment to protecting its employees, customers, and digital systems from the growing menace of cybercrime through an intensive Cybersecurity Awareness Forum held in Kumasi. The event, organized by the company’s Northern Business District, took place on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at MTN’s Ashanti Regional Office in Kaase, and formed part of MTN’s annual Global Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign.

Themed “Securing Our Digital Future,” the forum sought to raise awareness of the increasing sophistication of cyber threats and equip employees with the knowledge and practical tools to detect, prevent, and respond to online attacks.

The program featured an engaging panel discussion led by top MTN Ghana executives, including Adwoa Afrakoma Baah Obeng, Senior Manager, Retail Experience – Northern Business District; Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei, Senior Manager, Enterprise Information Security and Governance – MTN Ghana; and Simon Amoh, Senior Manager – Northern Business District.

The experts took participants through various aspects of cybersecurity, such as social engineering techniques, phishing attacks, online scams, data protection, and digital ethics, emphasizing that cybercrime is no longer a distant threat but a daily reality that can affect individuals and organizations alike.

Addressing journalists after the event, Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei stressed that the fight against cybercrime requires constant vigilance, responsible online behavior, and proactive education.

“Cybersecurity is no longer optional—it’s essential,” she asserted. “As our world becomes more digital, cybercriminals continue to find new ways to exploit weaknesses. The best form of protection is awareness—understanding how these attacks happen and taking preventive measures before it’s too late.”

Hanson-Kotei explained that MTN Ghana’s cybersecurity initiatives go beyond protecting the company’s internal network. The telecom giant is also deeply involved in national efforts to build a safer digital ecosystem through public awareness campaigns and educational outreach.

“As part of our broader strategy, we’re extending cybersecurity education to senior high schools across both rural and urban communities,” she noted. “These programs aim to help young people recognize digital threats, protect their personal information, and understand how their online actions can affect their future. Cyber awareness must begin early to build a digitally responsible generation.”

She added that MTN Ghana continues to invest in employee training and digital tools to strengthen its internal security systems while promoting a culture of caution and integrity in online engagements.

“Our employees are our first line of defense,” she said. “We want every staff member to be alert, informed, and empowered to respond to any cyber threat. Together, we can safeguard MTN’s digital environment and our customers’ trust.”

Simon Amoh, Senior Manager for the Northern Business District, also commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention in an era where cyberattacks are becoming more complex and frequent. He emphasized that protecting MTN’s digital infrastructure begins with empowering its people with the right skills and mindset.

“Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility,” he said. “Every employee, regardless of department, plays a crucial role in keeping our systems and data secure. Today’s session has provided valuable lessons that will help all of us strengthen our vigilance both at work and in our personal digital lives.”

Participants at the forum expressed appreciation for MTN Ghana’s proactive approach, describing the training as eye-opening and relevant. Many staff members noted that the practical examples shared during the session had deepened their understanding of how cyber threats manifest and how to respond effectively.

The program also provided a platform for staff to ask questions, share personal experiences with suspicious online activities, and learn how to detect and report potential threats through MTN’s internal security channels.

Through initiatives like this, MTN Ghana continues to demonstrate leadership in digital safety and cybersecurity awareness, ensuring that its workforce is well-equipped to respond to the ever-evolving threat landscape.

The company’s continuous investment in cybersecurity training, public education, and technological resilience underscores its unwavering commitment to protecting its digital ecosystem, empowering its people, and promoting a safer online environment for all Ghanaians.

As cyber threats continue to rise globally, MTN Ghana’s call to action remains clear—everyone must stay alert, stay informed, and take responsibility to secure our shared digital future.
