MTN Ghana Reduces Tariffs Across All Services Following Implementation of New VAT Reforms

MTN Ghana has announced a comprehensive reduction in tariffs across all its products and services, following the implementation of key reforms to Ghana’s Value Added Tax (VAT) system under the Value Added Tax Act, 2025 (Act 1151).

In an official statement, the telecommunications giant confirmed that the new pricing structure took effect from January 1, 2026, in line with the amended VAT regime. The company stated that the tariff reductions apply immediately across its entire range of offerings, including voice, data, and digital services.

According to MTN Ghana, the decision reflects changes in the national tax framework introduced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to simplify tax administration, improve compliance, and reduce the financial burden on households and businesses. The company emphasized that the reforms have positively affected its cost structure, making it possible to pass on the benefits directly to subscribers.

The VAT reforms introduced by the GRA include a reduction in the standard VAT rate to 20 percent and the complete abolition of the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy. Additionally, the VAT registration threshold for goods-dealing businesses has been increased from GH¢200,000 to GH¢750,000, exempting many small and medium-sized enterprises from VAT registration obligations.

Other significant changes include the re-coupling of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) levies with VAT, enabling businesses to claim input tax credits. The VAT Flat Rate Scheme has also been eliminated as part of efforts to create a more streamlined, transparent, and efficient VAT system.

MTN Ghana explained that the tariff reductions are intended to ensure that customers benefit directly from the improved tax environment, reinforcing the company’s commitment to affordability, innovation, and customer-centric service delivery. The company noted that aligning its pricing with national fiscal policies supports broader efforts to stimulate economic growth and digital inclusion.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Revenue Authority has urged all VAT-registered taxpayers, including employers, importers, exporters, accountants, and tax consultants, to familiarize themselves with the updated VAT framework. The Authority has encouraged stakeholders to seek guidance through official GRA channels to ensure full compliance with the new law.

MTN Ghana has advised customers to visit its official website for detailed information on the revised tariffs and assured subscribers of its continued dedication to delivering high-quality, value-driven telecommunications services that meet the evolving needs of Ghanaians.
