MTN Ghana Leads Charge Against Rising Cyber Threats in the Ashanti Region

MTN Ghana has taken a bold step in strengthening its fight against cybercrime and promoting digital safety among its workforce with the organization of a comprehensive Cybersecurity Awareness Forum in Kumasi. The event, held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at MTN’s Ashanti Regional Office in Kaase, formed part of the company’s annual Global Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign, which focuses on equipping employees with the knowledge and tools needed to combat the rising tide of cyber threats in Ghana and beyond.
The forum, which was themed “Securing Our Digital Future,” brought together employees from the Northern Business District to learn, engage, and share insights on how to protect personal and corporate digital assets in an increasingly connected world.

The event featured a high-level panel discussion led by MTN Ghana executives including Adwoa Afrakoma Baah Obeng, Senior Manager, Retail Experience – Northern Business District; Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei, Senior Manager, Enterprise Information Security and Governance; and Simon Amoh, Senior Manager – Northern Business District.

Panelists delved deeply into contemporary issues in cybersecurity such as social engineering attacks, phishing scams, data privacy, online fraud, and responsible digital behavior, highlighting how these issues affect both individuals and organizations. Participants were educated on practical preventive measures and encouraged to act as digital safety ambassadors within their workplaces and communities.

Speaking to journalists after the event, Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei underscored the importance of cybersecurity in modern life, stressing that it has become an indispensable part of personal and corporate responsibility.
“Cybersecurity is no longer optional—it’s essential,” she emphasized. “In today’s world, almost every aspect of our lives is connected to the internet, from business operations to personal communication. The more digital we become, the more vigilant we must be. It’s not just about protecting systems, but protecting people and their livelihoods.”

Hanson-Kotei explained that MTN Ghana’s ongoing cybersecurity campaign is aimed at creating a culture of awareness and preparedness among its workforce while also contributing to national efforts to mitigate the growing threat of cybercrime. She said the company is committed to ensuring that both employees and customers adopt safe digital practices.
“As a company, we recognize that awareness is the foundation of security,” she said. “That is why we are investing in training, education, and outreach to empower people to protect themselves online. Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility—we must all play our part.”

She revealed that MTN Ghana has extended its cybersecurity awareness campaign beyond its internal staff through targeted outreach programs in senior high schools across both urban and rural communities. These programs, she noted, aim to teach young people about the risks associated with digital engagement, how to safeguard personal information, and how to navigate the internet responsibly.
“Our goal is to build a generation that understands the power of the digital world but also respects its dangers,” she added. “By teaching students to think before they click and to question suspicious links or messages, we are helping create a safer digital future for Ghana.”

The forum also encouraged MTN staff to become active participants in securing the company’s digital infrastructure by adhering to cybersecurity best practices, reporting suspicious activities, and sharing verified information about cyber risks.
Simon Amoh, Senior Manager for the Northern Business District, commended employees for their enthusiasm and commitment to embracing cybersecurity education. He reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s dedication to building a resilient, informed, and security-conscious workforce capable of addressing emerging digital threats.

“Cybersecurity awareness is the first line of defense against attacks,” he said. “We are proud to see our employees actively engaging in this initiative. Together, we can protect not only MTN’s systems but also contribute to a safer online environment for our customers and communities.”
The event received widespread commendation from participants, who described it as timely and impactful, particularly at a time when cyberattacks are becoming more sophisticated and prevalent.
Through initiatives like this, MTN Ghana continues to lead the charge in promoting digital literacy, data protection, and cybersecurity awareness, reaffirming its role as a responsible corporate leader dedicated to protecting both its people and customers in the evolving digital landscape.
The company’s sustained investment in education, innovation, and awareness stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s digital future remains secure, inclusive, and resilient.
