MTN Ghana Invests Over US$1 Billion to Power Ghana’s Digital Transformation

MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its leadership in driving Ghana’s digital advancement, announcing that it has invested more than US$1 billion since 2021 to strengthen its infrastructure, expand broadband access, and accelerate the nation’s transition into a fully connected digital economy.
The revelation was made by Mr. Ibrahim Misto, Chief Digital Officer of MTN Ghana, during his address at the 30th Africa Internet Summit held in Accra under the theme “Internet in Ghana, Today and Tomorrow.” The event, which drew policymakers, telecommunications executives, and technology innovators from across the continent, focused on charting the next phase of Africa’s Internet evolution.

Speaking at the summit, Mr. Misto underscored that MTN Ghana’s heavy investment reflects the company’s unwavering commitment to improving connectivity, expanding access, and supporting Ghana’s ambition of becoming a digital leader on the African continent.
“The story of MTN as a business is reflective of the evolution of the Internet within the African continent. Our services and infrastructure have advanced to support a wide range of innovations — from data and IoT to digital, fintech and enterprise solutions. MTN has transitioned from a telco to a technology company,” Mr. Misto stated.
He explained that the over US$1 billion investment made since 2021 has been directed toward network modernization, 4G expansion, and fibre connectivity to homes, schools, and businesses. According to him, this major capital commitment underscores MTN Ghana’s strategic focus on ensuring fast, reliable, and affordable Internet access for all Ghanaians.
Mr. Misto highlighted that MTN Ghana’s Mobile Money (MoMo) service continues to be one of the company’s most transformative innovations, with more than 17 million active customers across the country. The platform, he noted, has revolutionized financial inclusion by empowering millions of Ghanaians—especially those in underserved communities—with digital financial services.
“Through MoMo, we are not only enabling financial transactions but also promoting inclusion, entrepreneurship, and empowerment. It is a powerful tool that allows millions to participate in the digital economy, regardless of where they live,” he added.
Mr. Misto further emphasized that MTN Ghana’s vision extends beyond connectivity. The company’s goal, he said, is to create a robust and sustainable digital ecosystem that supports innovation, education, and socio-economic growth. He called for collaboration among government, private sector players, civil society, and the youth to build a resilient and inclusive Internet future for Ghana.
“We envision an Internet ecosystem that is faster, smarter, and more inclusive. Through the government’s robust digital agenda, Ghana is poised to lead Africa’s digital future. But this future must be built together — through shared innovation, commitment, and responsibility,” he noted.
He reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s dedication to its Ambition 2025 Strategy: Leading Digital Solutions for Africa’s Progress, which focuses on delivering advanced technology solutions that improve lives, drive business efficiency, and enhance public services.
Mr. Misto concluded by stressing that MTN Ghana’s mission is to ensure that every Ghanaian enjoys the benefits of a modern connected life. “Our focus remains on building a resilient Internet that delivers access, equity, and opportunity for all. We believe that through continued investment and partnership, Ghana’s digital transformation journey will be unstoppable,” he affirmed.

The Africa Internet Summit 2025, marking its 30th anniversary this year, provided a unique platform for discussing Africa’s Internet evolution, data governance, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion. Ghana’s hosting of the summit symbolized the nation’s growing leadership role in Africa’s digital revolution.
