MTN Ghana has revealed that it has invested over $1 billion into expanding and strengthening its network infrastructure across the country, as part of efforts to provide reliable connectivity and accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation. This announcement was made during a Civil Society Forum held at the company’s Head Office in Accra on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, which brought together representatives from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to discuss the future of connectivity, inclusivity, and sustainability.

The forum forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader stakeholder engagement program, aimed at fostering transparency, building trust, and strengthening collaboration with key partners who influence policy and advocate for community needs.

Opening the dialogue, Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, praised the role of CSOs in shaping policy direction and ensuring accountability in national development. She emphasized that the telecommunications industry had become the “sector of sectors,” with influence extending to education, health, governance, business, and other critical areas of Ghana’s socio-economic growth. She further explained that MTN’s growth strategy is anchored on responsibility and sustainability.

Ms. Wiafe cited key initiatives that demonstrate MTN’s environmental and social commitments, including the company’s ban on plastic bottles in its offices to minimize waste and its increasing reliance on renewable energy, which now accounts for half of its total energy use. She stressed that as MTN pushes for growth, it must also safeguard the environment and promote inclusivity for all Ghanaians.

Taking the forum through a detailed presentation, Reuben Opata, Chief Technical Officer of MTN Ghana, highlighted the enormous financial commitments required to build and sustain a resilient network. He disclosed that MTN has invested over $1 billion in its Ghanaian operations to expand coverage and improve the quality of service nationwide. However, he pointed out that persistent challenges such as frequent fiber cuts continue to disrupt connectivity. According to him, MTN has already spent about $22 million this year alone on repairing damaged fiber cables. He noted that these repairs are vital to keeping communication services running, adding that “without fiber, communication simply stops.”

Mr. Opata assured participants that MTN will continue to invest heavily in innovative technologies and resilient infrastructure to ensure consistent, high-quality service across the country.

Reaffirming MTN’s commitment to transparency and stakeholder inclusion, Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, Senior Manager for Corporate Communications, noted that engaging CSOs is crucial for advancing Ghana’s digital agenda. She explained that issues such as Mobile Money fraud, affordability of services, accessibility for persons with disabilities, and inclusivity in the digital economy cannot be addressed by the company alone, but require collaboration with civil society and government.

The forum gave CSO representatives the opportunity to raise their concerns and propose solutions to challenges affecting communities. Many emphasized the need for stronger safeguards against Mobile Money fraud, affordable data services, and greater accessibility for marginalized groups. They also urged MTN to continue designing community-centered innovations that address real social and economic needs.

Also present at the event were Mr. Samuel Bartels, Senior Manager for Regulatory and Government Affairs, members of the Corporate Communications team, and other MTN staff.

The forum concluded with a shared commitment between MTN Ghana and the CSOs to strengthen dialogue and cooperation, ensuring that Ghana’s digital future is not only technologically advanced but also inclusive and sustainable.

Through its billion-dollar investments and stakeholder-driven approach, MTN Ghana reiterated its determination to lead in delivering digital solutions that will transform lives and communities across the country.
