In a decisive effort to strengthen consumer protection and curb the rising threat of fraud affecting telecommunications and digital financial services, MTN Ghana has launched a dedicated shortcode—Y’ello Protect 419—to enable customers to report suspected fraudulent activity instantly.

The newly introduced 419 shortcode serves as a unified and official channel for customers to report any suspected fraud across MTN’s voice and data services, as well as its Mobile Money (MoMo) platform and other digital solutions. Subscribers who detect suspicious calls, messages, transactions or communications can now dial 419 for immediate attention and review by MTN’s fraud management teams.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Customer Relations Officer Jemima Kotei Walsh said the initiative underscores the company’s commitment to safeguarding customers and enhancing confidence in the digital ecosystem.

“The introduction of MTN Y’ello Protect 419 demonstrates our commitment to protecting our customers from fraud. By providing a simple and memorable shortcode, we are empowering consumers to take proactive steps in reporting fraud or anything that looks suspicious. We want to strengthen public trust, enhance customer protection and support our efforts to create a safer digital ecosystem for all,” she stated.

Ms. Kotei Walsh urged customers to remain vigilant in their interactions and to report any questionable communication or transactions without delay.

Fraud continues to be a persistent challenge in the telecom and mobile money sectors, especially as the use of digital financial services expands rapidly in Ghana. By centralising fraud reports through a single shortcode, MTN Ghana aims to accelerate the detection, investigation and resolution of fraud cases, improving service responsiveness and customer confidence.

MTN Ghana noted that Y’ello Protect 419 will complement its existing anti-fraud measures, including enhanced monitoring systems and ongoing customer awareness campaigns. The company believes that improved coordination between subscribers and internal security teams will strengthen overall fraud management and prevention efforts.

The launch comes at a time when MTN Ghana is sharpening its strategic focus on customer satisfaction and digital expansion for 2026. Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett emphasised that reinforcing customer trust remains central to the company’s strategic priorities.

“It’s satisfying to accomplish a goal, yet the real work lies in setting the next one,” Mr. Blewett said. “For 2026, our primary focus is enhancing the customer experience, understanding customer needs and responding meaningfully. We are listening closely to customer feedback and taking steps to address customer needs.”

He added that expanding digital access nationwide and reinforcing Ghana’s digital ecosystem will continue to guide MTN’s growth trajectory, with customer protection and security at the heart of its operations.

With the rollout of Y’ello Protect 419, MTN Ghana is reinforcing its message that as digital services grow, security and customer protection must evolve in step with technological innovation to ensure trust and safety for all users.
