MTN Ghana Foundation Partners UDS to Build GHS 9.7m Digital Resource Centre for Youth Empowerment in Northern Ghana

In a major stride toward advancing digital inclusion and youth empowerment in Ghana’s northern regions, the MTN Ghana Foundation has entered into a landmark partnership with the University for Development Studies (UDS) to commence the construction of a GHS 9.7 million Student Resource Centre on the Tamale campus.

The groundbreaking initiative underscores MTN Ghana Foundation’s unwavering commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering equitable access to technology-driven opportunities for young people across the country. The state-of-the-art facility, which is expected to be completed within eight months, will serve as a transformative hub for digital learning, innovation, and collaboration.

The upcoming Student Resource Centre is designed not only to benefit students of UDS but also to extend its reach to learners from surrounding communities and neighboring institutions, positioning Tamale as a strategic centre for digital literacy and skills development in Northern Ghana.

Key features of the new centre include a high-tech computer laboratory equipped with 70 laptops, robotics kits, and virtual conferencing technology to facilitate modern, hands-on learning experiences. In addition, the facility will provide access to the MTN Skills Academy platform, an online learning resource designed to help young people gain self-paced training in digital and technical disciplines aligned with the demands of the 21st-century job market.

The design of the centre emphasizes flexibility, creativity, and inclusivity, featuring modern collaborative spaces that promote teamwork, innovation, and peer-to-peer engagement. Importantly, enrolment opportunities will be open to non-UDS students across the northern region, ensuring that the project benefits a broader segment of Ghana’s youth population.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager at the MTN Ghana Foundation, highlighted the socio-economic significance of the initiative, noting that it represents a decisive investment in the future of Ghana’s youth.

“With over half of Ghana’s population under 25, empowering our youth, especially in underserved regions, is not just a social responsibility but an economic imperative,” he stated. “This centre will be a launchpad for innovation, helping young people build the skills that today’s job market demands.”

Mr. Kuzoe further emphasized that while digital connectivity in Ghana has improved significantly, challenges such as youth unemployment and limited access to digital resources continue to hinder equitable growth. He said the Foundation views this initiative as part of the solution—a means to train young minds, inspire leadership, and build confidence and self-reliance through technology.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Professor Muniru Alhassan, Dean of the UDS Nyankpala Campus, commended the MTN Ghana Foundation for its vision and timeliness of the project, describing it as “a game-changer for higher education and community development in the north.”

“In today’s job market, technical skills alone aren’t enough. Students need exposure to real-world applications, teamwork, and digital fluency. This facility provides all that in one place,” he remarked.

Professor Alhassan added that the Resource Centre would not only enhance teaching and learning outcomes but also nurture entrepreneurial mindsets, preparing students to create opportunities rather than wait for them.

The initiative aligns seamlessly with the MTN Ghana Foundation’s broader mission to invest in sustainable educational and digital inclusion projects that build resilient communities. Over the years, the Foundation has rolled out numerous interventions aimed at enhancing access to quality education, empowering young people, and bridging socio-economic inequalities across Ghana.

By channeling significant resources into Northern Ghana, the MTN Ghana Foundation seeks to unlock the region’s potential as a hub for digital talent, complementing government and institutional efforts to build a knowledge-based economy.

As construction of the GHS 9.7 million UDS Student Resource Centre begins, optimism abounds that the facility will serve as a catalyst for transformation, equipping the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders with the digital skills to shape Ghana’s future.

Through this strategic collaboration, MTN Ghana Foundation continues to reaffirm its belief that “everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life.”
