MTN Ghana Fires Warning Shots at Cyber Threats During Kumasi Staff Forum

MTN Ghana has once again demonstrated its leadership in digital safety and corporate responsibility by holding a Cybersecurity Awareness Forum for its staff in Kumasi to strengthen their defenses against the growing wave of cyber threats targeting individuals and businesses worldwide.
The event, held on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the company’s Ashanti Regional Office in Kaase, formed part of MTN’s annual Global Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is observed under the theme “Securing Our Digital Future.” The initiative reflects MTN Ghana’s proactive approach to protecting its digital ecosystem through education, vigilance, and the empowerment of its workforce.
The forum brought together employees from MTN’s Northern Business District, which covers the Ashanti and parts of the northern regions, for a highly interactive session that focused on data protection, cyber fraud, social engineering, phishing, and safe online practices.
Leading the discussions were some of MTN Ghana’s top executives, including Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei, Senior Manager for Enterprise Information Security and Governance; Adwoa Afrakoma Baah Obeng, Senior Manager for Retail Experience – Northern Business District; and Simon Amoh, Senior Manager for the Northern Business District.

The resource persons delivered powerful messages on the urgent need for staff to remain alert in a rapidly evolving digital environment where criminals constantly exploit human error, weak passwords, and misinformation.

Speaking during the session, Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei cautioned that cybersecurity is no longer a back-office issue but a core business imperative that determines organizational survival and public trust.
“Cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility, not just the work of IT professionals,” she emphasized. “The success of any business in the digital era depends largely on how well its people understand and manage the risks that come with technology.”

She warned that cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated, targeting both companies and individuals through scams, fake links, data breaches, and identity theft schemes.
“The human element remains the weakest link,” she noted. “That is why awareness and vigilance are our strongest defenses. Every employee must be alert to potential threats—whether in emails, social media messages, or online transactions—and report suspicious activities immediately.”
Mrs. Hanson-Kotei further explained that the “Securing Our Digital Future” campaign was designed to reinforce safe digital habits among staff and to extend MTN’s commitment to cybersecurity education beyond the workplace.

“MTN Ghana is also taking this campaign to schools and communities,” she revealed. “We are teaching young people and the general public how to stay safe online, protect their personal information, and avoid cyber traps. This is how we build a digitally secure nation.”
On her part, Adwoa Afrakoma Baah Obeng, Senior Manager for Retail Experience in the Northern Business District, commended the high level of engagement and enthusiasm shown by participants. She described the initiative as part of MTN’s broader goal of fostering a security-conscious corporate culture that prioritizes integrity, trust, and digital resilience.
“Cybersecurity is not just about protecting company data; it’s about protecting people, families, and livelihoods,” she stated. “When our employees understand the importance of cybersecurity, they become ambassadors of digital safety in their communities.”

Simon Amoh, Senior Manager for the Northern Business District, also praised the initiative and noted that MTN Ghana’s leadership in cybersecurity awareness aligns with its mission to deliver safe, reliable, and innovative digital experiences to customers.
“Cyber threats are real and constantly changing,” he remarked. “Our ability to continue leading in the telecom and digital space depends on how well we can anticipate and prevent these threats. Through awareness and education, we are building a more resilient MTN.”
The forum featured practical demonstrations, case studies, and engaging discussions on how staff can recognize and respond to real-life cyber incidents. Participants were urged to apply what they learned not only in their professional duties but also in their personal lives.

Employees expressed gratitude to the company for prioritizing their safety and providing continuous education on digital protection. Many described the forum as an eye-opener that deepened their understanding of modern cyber risks and the importance of responsible digital behavior.
By hosting this awareness forum, MTN Ghana has once again fired a strong warning shot at cyber threats, affirming its commitment to building a cyber-resilient organization while supporting Ghana’s broader efforts to create a safe and secure digital environment for all.
Through initiatives like this, MTN Ghana continues to set the benchmark for corporate leadership in cybersecurity, empowering its workforce to protect not only the company’s digital assets but also their own digital lives and those of the communities they serve.
