MTN Ghana Expands Girls-in-ICT Drive, Trains Over 13,000 Girls Across 11 Regions

MTN Ghana has intensified its partnership with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations to broaden the reach of the National Girls-in-ICT Initiative, a flagship program aimed at equipping young Ghanaian girls with vital digital skills for the 21st-century workforce.

Since the program’s inception, more than 13,000 girls between the ages of 9 and 15, as well as 1,300 teachers, have received hands-on training in practical ICT disciplines such as coding, website development, animation, and game design. The program has so far reached 11 regions across Ghana — including North-East, Western-North, Ahafo, Bono-East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, Eastern, Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta.

MTN Ghana, one of the country’s largest private-sector contributors to digital inclusion efforts, originally committed GHS 10 million to the program in 2021 as part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations. However, the company has since expanded that pledge to GHS 17.6 million, extending its support through to 2025 to help scale the initiative’s reach and impact.

Speaking at the climax of the Volta Region edition of the program, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, highlighted the far-reaching benefits of the initiative and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to digital equity.

“At MTN, we believe in inclusivity — empowering girls, the differently abled, and everyone who deserves a chance. We are not just investing in words but in action. We want to ensure every Ghanaian child, especially girls, can access practical ICT education. The future belongs to those with digital skills. It’s not a luxury anymore — it’s a necessity,” she said.

She also echoed the vision of MTN Ghana CEO, Stephen Blewett, stating, “Our CEO always says the next big thing must come from Africa. We are here to help make that happen by providing the skills, the tools, and the platform.”

The Volta Region event marks the first of three regional Girls-in-ICT events scheduled for 2025. The next editions are expected to take place in the Upper East and Upper West Regions, as the Ministry pushes for nationwide coverage.

To sustain and institutionalize the program, the Ministry of Communication is also working toward establishing a dedicated Girls-in-ICT Trust Fund. The fund is expected to secure long-term financial and technical support to reach more beneficiaries, especially in underserved and rural communities.

The Girls-in-ICT Initiative reflects Ghana’s national ambition to close the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and aligns closely with MTN Ghana’s broader vision to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world. It also underscores the company’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all.

As the digital economy continues to evolve, MTN Ghana is positioning itself as a critical enabler — ensuring that young girls across the country are not only participants but leaders in the digital revolution that lies ahead
