MTN Ghana Commits GHS 17.6 Million to Empower Girls Through ICT Education

MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to digital empowerment and gender inclusivity by increasing its support for the National Girls-in-ICT Initiative to GHS 17.6 million — a significant boost aimed at bridging the gender gap in technology education across Ghana.

The Girls-in-ICT program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, is designed to equip girls aged 9 to 15, along with their teachers, with practical digital skills that are essential for the modern workforce. So far, the initiative has trained over 13,000 girls and 1,300 teachers across 11 regions, including North-East, Western-North, Ahafo, Bono-East, Bono, Savannah, Northern, Eastern, Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Volta.

Participants are introduced to hands-on training in coding, website development, game design, and animation — preparing them for roles in the digital economy and helping to close the technology skills gap between genders.

Originally, MTN Ghana committed GHS 10 million to the program in 2021 as part of its 25th Anniversary celebration. That pledge has now grown by over 75%, extending the company’s support through to 2025 and cementing its status as one of the most dedicated private-sector partners in Ghana’s digital inclusion agenda.

Speaking at the climax of the Volta Region edition of the program, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, praised the impact of the initiative on the lives of young girls.

“At MTN, we believe in inclusivity — empowering girls, the differently abled, and everyone who deserves a chance. We are not just investing in words but in action. We want to ensure every Ghanaian child, especially girls, can access practical ICT education. The future belongs to those with digital skills. It’s not a luxury anymore — it’s a necessity,” she said.

Wiafe also echoed the vision of MTN Ghana’s CEO, Stephen Blewett, saying, “Our CEO always says the next big thing must come from Africa. We are here to help make that happen by providing the skills, the tools, and the platform.”

The Volta Region event marks the first in a series of three regional Girls-in-ICT programs scheduled for 2025, with Upper East and Upper West lined up for the subsequent editions. As part of a long-term plan to sustain and expand the initiative, the Ministry is working toward the establishment of a dedicated Trust Fund to ensure continuous national implementation.

MTN Ghana’s deepening involvement in the program aligns with its overarching vision of leading the delivery of a bold new digital world while ensuring that everyone, regardless of gender or location, benefits from a modern, connected life.

As Ghana’s digital transformation accelerates, MTN Ghana continues to stand at the forefront — nurturing the next generation of female leaders in technology and ensuring that no girl is left behind in the country’s digital future.
