MTN Ghana and MTTD Launch Road Safety Training for Drivers and Staff in Northern Business District

In a decisive move to enhance road safety and curb the rising incidence of traffic accidents, MTN Ghana, in partnership with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, has launched its 2025 nationwide road safety training program. The first session took place on Monday at the MTN office in Nhyiaeso, Kumasi, with drivers and staff in the Northern Business District becoming the inaugural beneficiaries.
This year’s edition marks a significant shift in MTN Ghana’s approach, as the program is now delivered in collaboration with the MTTD. The initiative aims to equip MTN’s drivers and staff with practical road safety skills while promoting strict compliance with Ghana’s national traffic regulations.
Given MTN’s status as the country’s largest telecommunications provider with a vast fleet and extensive staff base, the training is expected to foster safer driving behavior among its drivers across the nation.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director for Education, Research, and Training at MTTD, led the facilitation. He expressed deep concern over the rising incidence of preventable road crashes in Ghana, describing the situation as alarming and calling for proactive measures to protect road users.

Speaking to journalists during the session, Chief Superintendent Obeng revealed that between January and October 2025, Ghana recorded 11,000 road crashes, which resulted in over 2,400 fatalities and 12,000 injuries. “These figures are not just numbers; they represent lives lost and families affected. This partnership with MTN Ghana is timely. Building the capacity of their drivers and staff is essential so that when they are on the road, they operate vehicles safely and responsibly,” he emphasized.

He further noted that the increase in road crash statistics compared to the previous year underscores the urgent need for stronger interventions and collaborative efforts to reduce accidents.
About the Training
MTN Ghana conducts the capacity-building program twice annually to enhance the driving skills and safety awareness of its staff drivers. Road safety and defensive driving remain central pillars of the company’s occupational health and safety policy.
The training program focuses on:
Defensive driving techniques
Hazard recognition and risk assessment
Safe driving under varying road and weather conditions
Vehicle inspection and maintenance
Compliance with Ghana’s traffic regulations, including speed limits, seatbelt use, and avoidance of distracted driving

MTN Ghana has maintained a strong reputation for road safety, with its corporate drivers previously receiving awards for exemplary driving performance. The company enforces strict adherence to Ghana’s traffic laws, and any breaches attract disciplinary action.
MTN’s Commitment to Road Safety
Road safety training is part of mandatory induction for all new employees and is refreshed annually for all staff. The overarching goal is to protect MTN employees, passengers, and the wider public. By partnering with certified training institutions such as the MTTD, MTN continues to implement global best practices in driver training, contributing to a culture of safety on Ghana’s roads.

An MTN Ghana spokesperson reiterated the company’s dedication, stating, “Our corporate drivers are at the forefront of our operations. Ensuring their safety, and that of other road users, is non-negotiable. This training strengthens their skills and reinforces our commitment to safe driving practices nationwide.”
With the launch of the 2025 road safety program, MTN Ghana and the MTTD aim to set a benchmark for corporate responsibility in road safety, emphasizing that proactive training and strict compliance are vital tools in reducing road traffic incidents and safeguarding lives.
