Motivating Excellence — Atwima Mponua MP Hon. Seth Osei Akoto Fulfils Campaign Promise with GH¢55,000 Awards to Teachers and Students

In a resounding show of commitment to education and human capital development, the Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Hon. Seth Osei Akoto, has fulfilled one of his major campaign promises by investing GH¢55,000 in rewarding dedicated teachers and brilliant students at the maiden edition of the Heroes of Education Awards held on Friday, October 10, 2025.

The colourful and well-attended event, themed “Empowering Teacher Commitment Through Motivation,” brought together traditional leaders, education officials, parents, students, and community members. The ceremony sought to celebrate educators whose hard work continues to shape the future of the district, as well as students who have demonstrated academic excellence.

Hon. Osei Akoto, addressing the gathering, described teachers as “the real architects of the nation’s progress,” emphasizing that no nation can advance beyond the quality of its teachers. He noted that the awards were instituted to boost morale among teachers and inspire students to strive for greater academic success.

“Teachers play a critical role in nation-building, and their motivation is key to achieving better educational outcomes. This initiative is my way of appreciating their sacrifice and renewing our shared commitment to quality education in Atwima Mponua,”the MP stated.

Thirteen outstanding educators—comprising twelve classroom teachers and one non-teaching staff—were honoured with 43-inch flat-screen televisions, gas burners, and certificates of recognition. Additionally, twenty-three top-performing BECE candidates from basic schools across the district received trunks, chop boxes, and student mattresses as a reward for their hard work and determination.

Hon. Osei Akoto disclosed that the total cost of the awards amounted to GH¢55,000, which he personally funded as part of his broader vision to uplift education in the constituency. He said this gesture was a continuation of his campaign promise to make education a priority area in his development agenda.

While commending the District Directorate of Education and the Ghana Education Service for their dedication, the MP expressed concern about the recent BECE and WASSCE results in the district, describing them as “not satisfactory.” He urged education stakeholders to intensify efforts to improve performance and requested a detailed strategic plan from the District Director of Education by the end of the year.

In addition to the awards, Hon. Osei Akoto announced the establishment of a scholarship scheme to support brilliant but needy students and provide professional development opportunities for teachers. He said the initiative will ensure that financial hardship does not hinder access to education or career advancement for teachers in the district.

Some of the award-winning teachers expressed deep appreciation to the MP for recognizing their efforts. They described the gesture as timely, saying it would inspire them to work even harder to improve educational outcomes in Atwima Mponua. However, they also highlighted the challenge of inadequate accommodation for teachers, noting that high rental costs—caused by the area’s mining boom—were pushing some teachers to seek transfers. They appealed to the government and the MP to consider the construction of teachers’ quarters to help retain staff and improve effective teaching and learning.

The BECE awardees also expressed gratitude to the MP for his encouragement and pledged to study harder to achieve greater academic success.

The event, attended by the District Chief Executive, the District Director of Education, traditional leaders, and parents, was hailed as one of the most impactful educational initiatives in recent years within the constituency. Many attendees praised Hon. Seth Osei Akoto for his visionary leadership and genuine commitment to uplifting the standard of education in Atwima Mponua.

As the Heroes of Education Awards concluded with applause and joy, it was clear that Hon. Osei Akoto’s initiative had not only fulfilled a campaign promise but also reignited a spirit of hope, motivation, and academic excellence in the entire district.
