Mother’s Day: Jackson University College Principal Calls for Nationwide Respect and Support for Mothers and Widows

As the world marks Mother’s Day, the Principal of Jackson University College, Mrs. Theodosia W. Jackson, has passionately called on Ghanaians to show the highest honor and unwavering respect to mothers for their countless sacrifices and lifelong dedication.

In an interview with OTEC FM’s Simon Opoku Afriyie ahead of the Mother’s Day celebration, Mrs. Jackson underscored the crucial role mothers play in shaping individuals and society, often at the expense of their own comfort and well-being.

“Our mothers have endured unimaginable hardships to nurture and support us. It is only right that we celebrate them, honor them, and express deep gratitude for their tireless love and sacrifices,” she emphasized.

Beyond honoring biological mothers, Mrs. Jackson appealed to Ghanaians to also remember widows, many of whom continue to shoulder the heavy responsibility of raising families under difficult circumstances.

“Let us not forget the widows among us — pray for them, encourage them with kind words, and extend generous support to improve their lives,” she urged.

Mrs. Jackson also expressed concern about certain religious practices where pastors allegedly label mothers as witches, leading to divisions within families.
“It is heartbreaking to see young people turn against the very women who gave them life based on unfounded accusations,” she lamented. “I strongly urge pastors to desist from such harmful teachings and instead promote messages of unity, love, and respect within families.”

She further advised that celebrating mothers should not be confined to a single day, but should be a daily practice embedded in the fabric of Ghanaian culture.

“A society that consistently honors its mothers is a society destined for greatness,” she said.

Mother’s Day, celebrated globally on the second Sunday in May, highlights the invaluable contributions of mothers to the growth and stability of families and communities. In Ghana, the day serves as an important occasion for reflection, appreciation, and renewed commitment to the well-being of mothers and widows alike.
