MobileMoney LTD Partners UNCDF to Boost Digital Finance Access for Women and Youth MSMEs

MobileMoney LTD has strengthened its commitment to deepening financial inclusion and supporting Ghana’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through a strategic partnership with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF). The collaboration forms part of the “Leveraging Digital Ecosystems for Increased MSMEs’ Productivity” project, an initiative funded by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Fund to accelerate digital transformation for underserved businesses across the country.

Announced in Accra on November 9, 2025, the partnership positions MobileMoney LTD as one of five service providers selected to design, develop, and scale digital financial solutions tailored specifically to the needs of women and youth-led MSMEs. The initiative prioritizes enterprises in underserved areas, especially in the Northern, Ashanti, and Western Regions, where access to digital financial services remains limited.

The collaboration is expected to address long-standing barriers impacting MSMEs’ growth—such as challenges with payments, access to loans, savings, insurance, and overall digital literacy. Through the project, MobileMoney LTD will deliver targeted financial literacy programs while developing innovative digital financial tools that enhance the efficiency and resilience of small businesses.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney LTD, Shaibu Haruna, emphasized that the empowerment of women and young entrepreneurs is integral to the company’s long-term strategy.

“At MobileMoney LTD, we believe that empowering women and young entrepreneurs through digital finance creates lasting economic value. This partnership with UNCDF aligns with our mission to drive digital inclusion for every Ghanaian and our broader goal of supporting sustainable development through innovation,” he stated.

Haruna noted that the company’s involvement in this UNCDF-led project builds on its ongoing agenda to support MSMEs with accessible, relevant, and affordable digital solutions. He revealed that market research conducted under the initiative highlighted key obstacles hindering small businesses, including gaps in access to tailored financial products for savings, credit, and insurance.

“Our journey has moved beyond simply providing a platform for payments. The market research we have completed highlights the critical gaps MSMEs face in accessing tailored solutions for loans, savings, and insurance. We are now focused on developing and testing prototypes that will close these gaps, ultimately fostering sustainable business growth in the Northern, Ashanti, and Western Regions and ensuring that our contribution to the global SDG agenda has maximum national impact,” he added.

The project commenced with capacity-building sessions spearheaded by UNCDF, equipping the MobileMoney LTD team with Human-Centric Design tools to guide the development of impactful solutions. With market research now completed, the company has advanced to the prototype development phase. These prototypes will be tested, refined, and scaled to deliver broader access to digital financial services, strengthen financial literacy, and support long-term economic development for women and youth entrepreneurs.

MobileMoney LTD’s participation in the project builds on years of consistent investment in women’s economic empowerment. The company has undertaken several transformative initiatives, including digitizing Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) groups, supporting market women with smartphones to modernize their operations, and providing seed funding to women MoMo agents to expand their businesses. These interventions form part of its overarching commitment to enhancing women’s participation in the digital economy while fostering inclusive national growth.

As the partnership progresses, both MobileMoney LTD and UNCDF anticipate a considerable uplift in the productivity, financial stability, and competitiveness of MSMEs in targeted regions. The collaboration reinforces Ghana’s broader digital transformation drive and supports the achievement of multiple Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality, decent work, and economic growth.
