Military Helicopter Crashes in Ashanti Region; Fatalities Feared

A Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter has reportedly crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, with early reports indicating that several individuals on board may have been burnt beyond recognition.

The tragic incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, but full details remain scant as emergency services, security operatives, and investigators rush to the crash site to assess the situation.

According to initial information gathered from military sources, the helicopter involved in the crash is a Z-9 aircraft operated by the Ghana Air Force. It reportedly took off from Accra around 9:12 a.m. and was en route to Obuasi when it suddenly went off the radar.

In a brief statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces shortly after the incident, the military confirmed the disappearance of the aircraft and disclosed that efforts were underway to locate the helicopter and re-establish communication.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft, a Z-9 helicopter, lost contact with the base while en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. A joint military-civilian emergency response team has been dispatched to trace the aircraft’s last known location,” the statement read.

Sources close to the military further disclosed that the helicopter was carrying a total of eight people—three crew members and five passengers—at the time of the incident. While the identities of those on board are yet to be officially released, eyewitnesses in nearby communities claim to have seen thick plumes of smoke and heard a loud explosion in the forested outskirts of Akrofuom, fueling fears of casualties.

A senior police officer in the region who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that some bodies have been retrieved from the scene, adding that “several of the victims appear to have been burnt in the wreckage.”

The Ghana Armed Forces has yet to confirm the cause of the crash and has assured the public that a full-scale investigation is being launched in collaboration with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and other national security agencies.

Meanwhile, the scene of the crash has been cordoned off as forensic teams begin recovery and assessment operations.

This tragic development has sent shockwaves across the nation, particularly as speculation grows about the identities of the passengers involved. Families of military personnel and top government officials have been advised to stay calm and await official communication from the Defence Ministry.

More updates are expected as the Ghana Armed Forces prepares to hold a press briefing in the coming hours to provide further clarity on the situation.
