Many of the youth have abandoned cocoa farming for gold mining- Amanasehene

Chief of Amanase, Osabarima Efuobefom Asarapanyin has voiced his worries regarding the declining interest in cocoa production among the youth, attributing this trend to illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.

According to him, it is very heartbreaking to see many of the youth abandoning cocoa farming for gold mining.

“It is sad to see the youth forgo what has been left down to them,” he lamented.

“The ancestors who gave birth to cocoa farming did their best to ensure that the production is preserved for future generations,” he added.

Ahead of the Bomukye Festival scheduled from February 8 to 15, 2024, Osabarima Efuobefom Asarapanyin expressed hope that this year’s celebration would help rekindle interest in cocoa production.

He pointed out that advancements in civilization and digitalization have simplified cocoa cultivation compared to previous methods, reinforcing his commitment to sustainable agricultural growth and afforestation.

The Chief encouraged Ghanaians to participate in the Bomukye Festival, which aims to not only celebrate culture but also revive interest in cocoa production among the youth.

The festival will feature various activities, including educational initiatives on cocoa farming.

“All these events are arranged to make the event a memorable one,” he noted.

Osabarima Efuobefom Asarapanyin further added that the festival will culminated in a grand durbar on the final day designed to educate attendees about environmental stewardship and responsible mining practices.

In conclusion, he urged traditional and political leaders to dissociate from illegal mining, which he believes is detrimental to Ghana’s natural resources.
