The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Manhyia South Constituency, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has made a significant contribution to the well-being of inmates at the Manhyia Local Prison in the Ashanti Region. On his recent visit, Lawyer Awuah donated over 360 consumable food items, including packed meals of rice, soft drinks, and bottled water, to the prisoners.
In addition to the food donations, Lawyer Awuah launched the “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Health Fund,” in honour of his predecessor, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the former MP for Manhyia South. The health fund, with an initial contribution of GHC 5,000, is aimed at covering healthcare costs that go beyond what the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) provides for the inmates. According to Lawyer Awuah, the health fund will serve as a supplemental resource to ensure that the prisoners’ health needs are consistently met. He also committed to making periodic contributions to keep the fund active and sustainable.
Speaking during the donation event, Lawyer Awuah underscored the importance of looking after the immediate needs of the inmates, particularly their health and nutrition. He also used the occasion to urge Ghanaians to support the NPP in the upcoming elections, citing the party’s dedication to community welfare and development.
“We must ensure that we continue to prioritize the well-being of every citizen, including those who are incarcerated. I believe in the values of the NPP and our commitment to progress, which is why I encourage everyone to vote massively for the party in the upcoming elections,” Lawyer Awuah stated.
The officer in charge of the Manhyia Local Prison, Chief Joseph Asabre, expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the prison. He lauded the parliamentary candidate for the generous donation and highlighted the positive impact it would have on the lives of the inmates.
“We are extremely grateful to Lawyer Awuah for this thoughtful gesture. This donation will greatly benefit the inmates and contribute to improving their living conditions. I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to other individuals and organizations to extend similar support, as the prison faces several challenges that require attention,” Chief Asabre remarked.
The donation by Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah is seen as a timely intervention, particularly in addressing the nutritional and healthcare needs of the prisoners. The health fund established in honour of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is expected to provide lasting support for inmates, reinforcing efforts to improve their overall well-being.
