Man Drowns In River Offin In An Attempt To Escape From Forestry Guards

One person has been retrieved dead with a search underway for another after two persons allegedly drowned in the River Offin at Anwiafutu in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti region.

The incident occurred on Monday, January 30, 2023, when a 17-year-old deceased, Kwabena Anane, and 18-year-old Atta Derrick, who is still missing in the river, went in search of gold in an abandoned pit.

Some residents said they were chased by some persons suspected to be forest guards while searching for the gold and in the process drown in the river.

Although they were five, the residents said, three managed to escape while the two teenagers could not.

They alleged that the two teenagers tried to swim out but the suspected forest guards pelted them with stones thereby denyinng them the opportunity to swim to a safe haven.

The search is still ongoing to retrieve the 18-year-old who is still missing in the river
