Former President John Dramani Mahama has extended his support to Zongo community radio stations in Kumasi, donating motorbikes to several Muslim-owned media houses to enhance their outreach and reporting capabilities. The donation, part of Mahama’s ongoing efforts to connect with the Zongo communities ahead of the December elections, included stations like Alpha Radio, Gaskia FM, Zuria FM, Peacedawa, and Gila Committee.
Mahama’s visit to Kumasi’s Zongo areas included a stop at the palace of the Wangara Chief of Aboabo, Alhaji Ibrahim Watara. Accompanied by prominent NDC figures, including Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Asawasi, and Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman Andrews Nana Akwasi, Mahama was warmly welcomed by the community.
During the event, Mahama emphasized the importance of community media as a platform for sharing information, uniting communities, and addressing local concerns. “Community radio stations play an essential role in amplifying the voices of our neighborhoods, especially in areas where people rely heavily on local media,” Mahama said. “By supporting these stations, we’re helping Zongo communities stay informed and engaged.”
The former president also provided financial assistance to a young woman whose story had recently garnered attention on social media. The SHS graduate had been seen selling red plantains with her mother to raise funds for her nursing education, and Mahama’s support will help her pursue her studies at the University for Development Studies.
In his address, Mahama urged the Zongo community to choose leaders based on experience and a proven track record. He highlighted the importance of effective governance to address Ghana’s pressing issues, expressing his readiness to lead and drive meaningful change.
The NDC Manifesto spokesperson, Mustapha Abubakari, reinforced the party’s commitment to Zongo development, stressing that 18 new policies were crafted specifically for Zongo communities. He also addressed divisive rhetoric, urging the community to reject messages based on religion or tribal affiliations, and called for unity in support of inclusive development.
The donation and Mahama’s message received strong approval from the local leaders and community members, with Ashanti Regional Zongo Caucus Coordinator Osman Nasiru Hamza describing it as a “blessing” for Zongo communities. Hamza noted that such gestures reflect Mahama’s dedication to supporting underrepresented areas and voiced optimism for more community-focused projects under Mahama’s leadership.
As December elections approach, Mahama’s support for local media and youth in Zongo communities continues to bolster his image as a candidate invested in inclusive growth and empowerment across Ghana.
