Salifu Basiru, a renowned political analyst and advocate for the development of Zongo communities, has called on residents of these areas to shift their focus from partisan politics to prioritizing development initiatives that will improve their quality of life.
Speaking during the launch of his two books, “Revolution of Politics in Kumasi Zangos” and “Islam and Second Marriage”, at the Asawasi Central Mosque, Mr. Basiru emphasized the need for politics to be utilized as a means to secure opportunities for the Zongo communities. These opportunities, according to him, include access to scholarships, jobs, healthcare facilities, and other essential services, rather than pursuing narrow political gains that do little to enhance the livelihoods of the people.
Mr. Basiru stressed the importance of placing development at the forefront of political discussions, urging residents to hold politicians accountable to deliver tangible benefits. He highlighted that politics should be about transforming the lives of the people, ensuring that the Zongo communities have better access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
“The time has come for us to demand more from our leaders, not just during election periods but all year round. Our focus should be on securing long-term projects that will enhance the lives of the people,” he said.
He also cautioned the youth in Zongo communities against being exploited by politicians, particularly during election seasons. According to Mr. Basiru, young people in these areas are often mobilized for political purposes during elections but are forgotten once the elections are over.
“Youth in the Zongo communities are a powerful force. But too often, they are used as tools for political gain and abandoned afterward. It’s time we demand more, not just in terms of promises but in actual development projects that will benefit everyone,” he noted.
Mr. Basiru’s books, *”Revolution of Politics in Kumasi Zangos”* and *”Islam and Second Marriage”*, delve into the political dynamics within the Zongo communities and provide an in-depth analysis of the issues facing these areas.
Alhaji Osman Bin Ahmed, the Ashanti Regional Chief of the Fulani community and the National Vice President of the Fulani Association of Ghana, who was also present at the event, echoed similar sentiments. He urged politicians to move away from engaging in political insults and focus on addressing the real issues affecting Ghanaians.
“Our politicians must rise above petty political insults and instead work towards improving the welfare of the people. The time for politicking for personal gain is over; now is the time for genuine development,” Alhaji Osman Bin Ahmed stated.
The event, held at the Asawasi Central Mosque, attracted several dignitaries, community leaders, and residents who applauded the call for a renewed focus on development over partisan politics. Both speakers stressed the importance of unity and urged the youth and leaders in Zongo communities to work together towards achieving sustainable growth.
As the Zongo communities continue to grapple with socioeconomic challenges, many hope that the sentiments expressed at this book launch will spark a new era of political accountability and development-driven leadership in these areas.
