The Juaben Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region, presided over by Rosemarie Afua Asante, has sentenced a 22- year-old labourer to 15 years imprisonment in hard labour for defiling a 9-year old girl.
The convict, Kofi Duffour, was jailed after changing his initial plea of not guilty to guilty to a count of defilement of a child under 16-years of age, contrary to section 101 (1) and (2) of the criminal offences Act 29/1960.
The court has also ordered the accused person to compensate the victim at amount of GHȼ2,000.00.
Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Inspector Charles Vitashie, who led the prosecution, said the victim is a pupil of Besoro Methodist School and stays with her mother who is the complainant in the case at Besoro.
On May 5, 2022, at about 6:00am, complainant left the victim at home and went to work. At about 11:00am same day, Kofi Duffour who stays in the same vicinity with the victim and her mother went to their house and knocked at their door.
According to prosecution, the victim who was asleep woke up and opened the door and met Duffour.
Duffour requested for a drinking water from the victim and she obliged by giving him a cup of water.
After taking the water, Duffour had hatched a diabolical plan in mind, pounced on the victim and sexually molested her in a veranda leading to the complainant’s room.
He then left the victim and bolted after the act. She narrated her ordeal to her mother on her return home.
Prosecution furthered that, complainant sent the victim to Bodomase police station and lodged an official compliant. An extract was prepared and forwarded to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) office at Effiduase for investigation.
A medical formed was issued to the complainant to send the victim to hospital for examination and treatment. The complainant brought the medical form, duly endorsed by a certified medical doctor.
Accused was arrested and investigation cautioned statement was obtained from him and freely volunteered a statement, prosecution concluded.
