Kwadaso Ohwimase Residents Cry for Urgent Clearance of Dangerous Refuse Dump Amid Health Fears

Residents of Kwadaso Ohwimase in the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly of the Ashanti Region have appealed to government and municipal authorities to urgently clear an old refuse dump in their community, warning that the situation poses serious health risks to both adults and children.

The refuse dump, which has existed for years, is located close to food vending points, drinking spots and residential areas, raising fears of the spread of airborne and communicable diseases. Residents say the continuous accumulation of waste has created an unhealthy environment, especially during hot weather, when offensive odours and swarms of flies become unbearable.

According to the residents, children who frequent the area are particularly exposed to health dangers, while food sold near the dump risks contamination. They expressed concern that if immediate action is not taken, the community could face outbreaks of diseases that could have been prevented through proper sanitation management.

Speaking on behalf of the community, residents appealed to the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly to treat the issue as an emergency and deploy the necessary resources to clear the dump and restore environmental safety. They stressed that clean surroundings are essential for healthy living and should not be neglected.

The Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Isaac Owusu, confirmed the concerns raised by residents and backed their plea for urgent intervention. He disclosed that several efforts to draw the attention of the Assembly to the situation have so far yielded no results, leaving the community frustrated and exposed to health risks.

Hon. Owusu called on the Municipal Assembly and relevant sanitation authorities to act swiftly, noting that the wellbeing of residents must be prioritised. He emphasized that effective waste management and a clean environment are critical to preventing disease and improving the quality of life in Kwadaso Ohwimase.

Residents remain hopeful that their appeal will be heeded and that immediate steps will be taken to clear the refuse dump and prevent further deterioration of environmental and public health conditions in the community.
