Kumawu MP Leads Ghanaian Delegation on Strategic Benchmarking Visit to UK House of Commons

Ghana’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy, advancing human rights, and enhancing legislative performance has entered a new phase as Honourable Ernest Yaw Anim, Member of Parliament for Kumawu, leads a distinguished delegation of Ghanaian lawmakers on a strategic benchmarking visit to the UK House of Commons.

The two-day high-level engagement, which commenced on 8th December 2025, brings together members of the Human Rights Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Ghana’s Parliament. The mission forms part of an ongoing collaboration between the Parliament of Ghana and the UK Parliament aimed at equipping legislators with modern governance tools and deepening institutional capacity.

During the visit, the Ghanaian delegation is expected to participate in a series of interactive sessions with UK parliamentarians and committee experts. These engagements will focus on critical areas including parliamentary oversight systems, legislative drafting, human rights protection mechanisms, citizen engagement strategies, and best practices in committee-based governance.

Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim, a respected voice on legal reform and democratic accountability, underscored the importance of the visit as a vital step toward improving Ghana’s legislative environment. He stressed that learning from the operational structures of a matured democracy like the United Kingdom offers valuable guidance for strengthening Ghana’s parliamentary framework.

“This strategic visit provides us with firsthand experience on how the UK Parliament structures its committees, scrutinizes legislation, and safeguards the rights of its citizens,” Hon. Anim said. “The insights we gain here will greatly inform Ghana’s ongoing efforts to refine our governance systems and enhance the effectiveness of our legislative bodies.”

The benchmarking mission is widely regarded as essential to Ghana’s broader agenda of modernizing its legislative processes. Parliamentary observers have noted that such collaborations expose lawmakers to globally recognized standards that help improve transparency, accountability, and public trust in governance institutions.

The visit also reinforces Ghana’s commitment to nurturing a people-centred democracy. By examining international best practices, the delegation is expected to return with renewed perspectives that will guide reforms in constitutional development, human rights protections, and the overall effectiveness of parliamentary committees.

As the delegation continues its engagements in London, expectations remain high that the outcomes will significantly contribute to shaping a more robust and forward-looking legislative system in Ghana. Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim’s role in leading the visit further solidifies his reputation as an advocate for national development, good governance, and institutional excellence.
