Public transport users in Kumasi have threatened to stage a demonstration if trotro drivers implement a proposed 20% increase in lorry fares.
According to the aggrieved passengers, drivers have already increased fares in recent months, making another increment unjustifiable. They also expressed frustration over a growing trend where drivers load passengers for shorter distances instead of full routes, forcing commuters to spend more than usual before reaching their destinations.
“This is unfair. Before we get home, we’ve already spent more than the original fare. It’s becoming a serious burden,” one frustrated commuter stated.
The commuters are calling on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, to intervene. They insist that if no action is taken, they will hit the streets in protest against the fare increment.
