Kumasi Mayor Hon Richard Ofori-Agyemang Commits KMA Support to Youth-Led Climate Action Projects

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, has pledged the unwavering support of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to young innovators developing climate-smart solutions in the metropolis.

He made the commitment at the Phase 2 Exhibition of the Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF), held on August 27, 2025, at the KMA Conference Hall, where dozens of youth groups and organisations showcased innovative projects aimed at tackling climate change and promoting sustainability.

The exhibition featured a wide range of eco-innovations, including smart solar-powered dustbins designed by 3-in-1 Tech Waste Solutions to improve waste collection, eco-friendly soaps made from plantain peels by Sunawash, and green charcoal produced from coconut husks by GAPS KNUST as an alternative to traditional wood-based charcoal.

Other projects included climate education campaigns spearheaded by Green Awareness International, smoke detectors developed by Martyrs of Uganda School to enhance fire safety, climate-resilient vegetable research by Echo Youth Alliance, and sustainable practices such as composting, tree planting, waste segregation, and biogas production implemented by the Crusaders.

Mayor Agyemang commended the youth for their creativity and assured them that the KMA was committed to partnering with them to expand and sustain their projects. He stressed that the Assembly would adopt an open-door policy for collaboration and financial support to ensure the continuity and growth of the innovations.

“These initiatives prove that our young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow but the innovators of today. They have shown that they can provide practical solutions to global problems, starting right here in Kumasi. The KMA will continue to stand with them, provide support, and integrate their innovations into the city’s sustainability agenda,” the Mayor said.

The Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and seeks to empower young people to lead climate action in their communities. The program runs under the theme “Youth Climate Action!! Stewards of the Environment”, reflecting its mission of building the next generation of climate leaders.

Organisers of the exhibition expressed optimism that the showcased projects would attract funding, investment, and partnerships to help scale them up for greater impact. They also lauded the KMA’s commitment to embracing youth-led climate innovation.

With Kumasi striving to become a greener and climate-resilient city, Mayor Agyemang emphasized that youth-driven solutions will remain central to the Assembly’s long-term environmental agenda.
