Kumasi Mayor, Engineers, and JICA Consultants Tour Site for Major Road Expansion Project

The Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, has led a high-powered delegation of stakeholders to inspect the corridor earmarked for the dualisation of the Kumasi Inner Ring Road, stretching from the Santasi Roundabout to the Ahodwo Roundabout.

The inspection formed part of ongoing preparatory activities toward the commencement of the multi-million-dollar project, which seeks to ease traffic congestion, enhance urban mobility, and improve road safety within the Kumasi Metropolis.

The Mayor was accompanied by senior officials from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), engineers from the Department of Urban Roads (Ashanti Regional Office), and a team of consultants from CTI Engineering International Co. Ltd. and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), led by Chief Consultant Mr. Junichiro Ogawa.

The joint team carefully examined sections of the project corridor to assess current road conditions, traffic flow patterns, and physical constraints that could affect the design and execution of the dual carriageway. Particular attention was given to ensuring that the project, once executed, aligns with Kumasi’s long-term urban transport and development strategy.

As part of the inspection exercise, the team also visited proposed relocation sites for car dealers, mechanics, and artisans whose businesses will be affected by the road expansion. The visit aimed at identifying suitable and convenient areas to resettle these businesses without disrupting livelihoods or economic activity.

Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang expressed his commitment to ensuring that the project is executed with minimal disruption to the lives and businesses of residents. He emphasized that the dualisation of the Santasi–Ahodwo stretch is a crucial intervention that will significantly transform Kumasi’s transport infrastructure and enhance the city’s image as a modern commercial hub.

“This project represents a major milestone in Kumasi’s road network improvement agenda. Once completed, it will not only reduce congestion and travel time but also promote economic productivity by facilitating smoother movement of goods and people,” the Mayor stated.

He further commended JICA and CTI Engineering for their continuous technical support to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, describing the partnership as vital to achieving sustainable urban development.

Chief Consultant Mr. Junichiro Ogawa, on his part, reaffirmed JICA’s commitment to providing high-quality technical expertise to ensure the project meets international standards. He noted that the collaboration with KMA and the Department of Urban Roads demonstrates Japan’s continued support for Ghana’s infrastructure modernization efforts.

The inspection concluded with discussions on the next phases of project implementation, including stakeholder engagement, resettlement planning, and environmental impact assessments.

The dualisation of the Santasi–Ahodwo section of the Inner Ring Road forms part of a broader initiative to upgrade Kumasi’s major transport corridors, reinforcing the city’s role as a central hub for commerce, tourism, and regional connectivity in Ghana.
