Kumasi High Court Jails Notorious Robber “GH” for Life and 120 Years for Murder and Robbery

In a major victory for justice and public safety, the Kumasi High Court has sentenced a 36-year-old notorious armed robber, Dominic Afriyie, alias “GH,” to a combined term of life imprisonment and 120 years with hard labour for his involvement in a brutal armed robbery and the cold-blooded murder of a respected pharmacist and contractor.
Presiding over the case was His Honour Mr. Abdul Razak, ESQ, who handed down the verdict on Thursday, 15th May 2025, after a full trial that spanned several months. The convict was found guilty by a seven-member jury on two counts of robbery and one count of murder. The sentences—120 years for robbery and life imprisonment for murder—are to run concurrently.
Horrific Crime at Atasemanso
The horrific incident occurred on 20th November 2021 at Atasemanso, a suburb of Kumasi, where Dominic Afriyie launched a violent armed attack on the residence of the late Michael Dela Agbo Klu and his family. Armed with a deadly weapon, the convict stormed the home at gunpoint, terrifying the household.
During the robbery, he made away with two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and a cash sum of GH¢1,500. In the course of the attack, Afriyie mercilessly shot Mr. Klu, aged 43, killing him instantly. Mr. Klu was a well-known pharmacist and building contractor, whose tragic death left a deep void in his community.
Swift Police Action and Arrest
The Ashanti Regional Police Command, acting on credible intelligence, launched a targeted operation following the incident. On 30th December 2021, police received information about a planned robbery in the same Atasemanso area.
In response, a surveillance operation was conducted, leading to the arrest of Dominic Afriyie and three others in the early hours of 31st December 2021. The arrest was made at 2:20 a.m. while the suspects were aboard a Toyota Corolla saloon car with registration number AS 5970-20. A search of the vehicle uncovered two pistols and two single-barreled shotguns, all suspected to be intended for criminal activities.
Subsequent investigations confirmed that Dominic Afriyie acted alone in the robbery and murder of Mr. Klu. The other suspects were not linked to that specific crime.
Trial and Sentencing
Afriyie was arraigned before the Kumasi High Court and pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, after examining the overwhelming evidence presented by prosecutors, the judge and jury unanimously found him guilty.
Delivering the sentence, His Honour Mr. Abdul Razak stressed the heinous nature of the crime and its impact on the victim’s family and the larger community. The court noted that such acts of lawlessness and disregard for human life must be met with the full force of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
Police Reassure Public
In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs for the Ashanti Region, the police commended the diligence and professionalism of the investigating officers, as well as the cooperation from members of the public.
“The Ashanti Regional Police Command wishes to assure residents of Kumasi and its environs of our continuous commitment to ensuring public safety and security. We urge the public to continue to support the police by providing timely and actionable information on suspicious individuals and activities,” the statement read.
This landmark conviction comes at a time when the Ghana Police Service is intensifying its efforts to crack down on violent crimes and restore public confidence in law enforcement and the justice system.
