Artisans at Krofrom CPC in the Manhyia South constituency have staged a large protest against the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) over the allocation of land on which they have operated for over 35 years. The artisans, primarily auto mechanics and fitters, allege that the land has been handed over to a private developer without prior notice or consultation, leaving them blindsided by the sudden move.
The demonstration, which took place on [insert date], saw the artisans expressing their displeasure at the KMA’s decision to allocate the land to the developer. The protesters woke up to find that the developer had offloaded heaps of gravel and sand at the site, effectively blocking the main entrance to their shops. This move has halted business operations, leaving vehicles belonging to clients trapped inside the compound.
Speaking to the media, one of the aggrieved mechanics lamented the situation. “As we speak, vehicles belonging to our clients cannot move out. This is a clear ambush, and it has left us stranded,” he said.
The artisans, some of whom have worked on the land for more than three decades, are frustrated by what they describe as an injustice. They claim they were not given any official notice about the sale or redevelopment of the land. According to them, the sudden blockage has not only disrupted their livelihoods but also affected their ability to serve customers.
“We have been here for over 35 years. How could the KMA allocate the land without informing us? We are not leaving the land unless the developer kills us,” one protester vowed.
The Assembly Member for the CPC electoral area, Hon. Isaac Owusu Ansah, who was present at the scene, made a passionate appeal to the angry artisans to remain calm. He assured them that he would engage the KMA to find an amicable solution to the issue.
“I understand your frustration, but let us approach this situation in a peaceful manner. I promise to speak with the authorities at KMA and ensure that we resolve this matter as soon as possible,” Hon. Owusu Ansah assured the protesters.
The Parliamentary Candidate for the Manhyia South constituency, Lawyer Adjei Baffour Awuah, also addressed the protesters. He expressed concern over the incident and pledged to collaborate with the assembly to resolve the situation.
“My office will work closely with the KMA to ensure that we find a solution that will not harm your businesses. I will engage the relevant authorities and keep you informed every step of the way,” Lawyer Awuah promised.
The artisans are hopeful that the intervention of local authorities and political representatives will bring about a resolution that will allow them to continue their operations without displacement.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
