Konongo Tragedy: 5 Feared Dead, 11 Injured as Sprinter Bus Crashes into Parked Tipper Truck

A horrific road accident at Atwedie near Konongo on the Kumasi–Accra Highway has left five people feared dead and eleven others battling for their lives after a Sprinter bus rammed into a stationary tipper truck in the early hours of Saturday, October 25, 2025.

The fatal crash involved a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GR 6626-22, which was reportedly heading toward Accra when it collided violently with the parked tipper truck on the shoulder of the road.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to OTEC News’ Kwame Agyenim Boateng recounted the chilling scene, describing it as one of the most devastating accidents witnessed on that stretch in recent times.

According to an eyewitness, the Sprinter bus driver appeared to have been negotiating a curve when he suddenly came face to face with the stationary truck, which had been parked on the highway without adequate warning signs. The driver, in a desperate attempt to avoid collision, lost control and crashed into the rear of the tipper truck, causing severe damage to the front section of the bus and trapping several passengers inside.

“Two passengers who were seated in front were completely trapped after the crash. It took fire officers close to two hours to rescue them,” the witness narrated with a trembling voice.

“Although medical experts have not confirmed the deaths officially, from what I saw, at least five of them may not survive,” he added sorrowfully.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), who swiftly responded to the distress call, worked tirelessly to extricate the trapped victims using specialized cutting equipment. Their prompt intervention, alongside assistance from the police and bystanders, helped prevent further casualties.

Emergency medical teams conveyed the injured victims to nearby health facilities for urgent medical attention. Reports indicate that some of the survivors sustained life-threatening injuries, including broken limbs, severe head trauma, and multiple cuts.

Security officers were also deployed to the scene to manage traffic flow, as the accident caused a temporary gridlock on the busy Kumasi–Accra Highway. The mangled vehicles were later towed away to clear the road for motorists.

Residents of Atwedie and other commuters have expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents on that stretch, attributing the incidents to reckless driving, poor road lighting, and improperly parked heavy-duty vehicles at night. They have called on authorities to intensify road patrols and ensure that stationary vehicles are promptly removed from highways to prevent similar tragedies.

Meanwhile, officials from the Konongo Police Command have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and to identify the owner and driver of the stationary tipper truck.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the deceased and injured victims were yet to be officially confirmed by the police.

The Atwedie accident adds to the growing list of tragic road crashes recorded along the Kumasi–Accra Highway this year, once again drawing attention to the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations and improved driver discipline across the country.
