The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative of Global Road Safety (BIGRS) and Vital Strategies, has launched the Kumasi Road Safety Surveillance Report .
The report was expected to inform the strategic planning of further road safety measures in the future adding that the identification of high-risk locations and times of day would help city agencies to focus their efforts on engineering remedial and targeted enforcement that would have the most impact.
The will provides information on crashes, deaths and injuries to enable stakeholders track trends and use the findings on at-risk road user groups, risk periods and high-risk crash locations to guide the implementation of interventions for improved outcomes.
Speaking to media in an interview, Mr Isaac Oduro representative from of the Ashanti Regional National Road safety on the occasion said “Almost 90 per cent of road fatalities in the observation period were pedestrians, motorcycle riders and bicyclists – the most vulnerable road users.
He also disclosed that other key findings of the report indicated that the highest number of crashes during the period was recorded in in the night during cloudy weather.
Mr Isaac Oduro added that, National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has initiated a comprehensive registration process for road transport service providers, marking a significant step in its commitment to overseeing and regulating the road transport sector.
He said this involved in road transport services, including transport companies, unions, state agency transport departments, school bus services, tyre service centers, and garages, are obligated to register with the Authority to comply with legal requirements.
Failure to register according to the Authority may result in sanctions imposed by the NRSA, as mandated by law.
On his part, Nana Yaw Akuoko is the Otumfour Assinhene also used to opportunity to appeal to Ghanaians that, road safety is a share responsibility to all of us therefore we should be more conscious about the road safety.
He said at the rate road accidents is claiming many lives in the country is alarming.
He said the economic and social consequences of road deaths, and the cost of treatment and rehabilitation for severely injured casualties, should be a major concern to all of us.
