KMA Launches Citywide Clean-Up Ahead of Asantehemaa Nana Konadu Yiadom III’s Funeral

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced a comprehensive citywide clean-up exercise to be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025, beginning at 6:00 a.m. The initiative is part of meticulous preparations for the upcoming funeral of the revered Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, and is aimed at ensuring Kumasi reflects the dignity and cultural pride of the Ashanti Kingdom as it hosts thousands of mourners and dignitaries.
In a statement issued by KMA’s Public Relations Unit, the Assembly underscored the importance of the exercise, describing it as both a civic responsibility and a cultural obligation to honor the late Queenmother. The Assembly stressed that the funeral, expected to draw attendees from across Ghana and the diaspora, offers a moment to showcase Kumasi’s commitment to tradition, unity, and environmental cleanliness.
The KMA has mobilized a wide range of stakeholders, including volunteer groups, the Ashanti Youth Association, Kumasi Youth Association, traditional councils, and community-based organizations, to lead the effort. All Assembly Members have been instructed to spearhead mobilization efforts in their respective electoral areas to ensure massive participation.
Key areas targeted for intensive cleaning include Ash-Town, Dichemso, Amakom, Asafo, Adum, Nhyiaeso, Dr. Mensah, Mmrom, K.O. Odumasi, Alabar, Manhyia Extension, Bantama, the Cultural Centre, and Waec Drain (Akwatia Line). Market centers, ceremonial routes, and busy intersections will also undergo rigorous cleaning ahead of the event.
Residents of Kumasi are being strongly urged to take part in the exercise in large numbers, as their involvement is seen as a mark of respect and reverence for Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who served as a symbol of unity and tradition in the Ashanti Kingdom.
“This clean-up is not just about sanitation; it is a demonstration of our collective pride in Kumasi as the cultural heartbeat of Ghana. By coming together to ensure the city is spotless, we are honoring the memory of the late Asantehemaa and upholding the standards of hospitality and dignity that define us as a people,” the statement read.
Security agencies, environmental health officers, and waste management teams will be deployed to provide logistical and technical support, ensuring that all targeted areas are thoroughly cleaned and ready to receive visitors. The funeral of Nana Konadu Yiadom III is expected to be a historic event, drawing royals, dignitaries, and mourners from across the country and beyond.
The KMA emphasized that the exercise is not a one-off event but part of a broader agenda to sustain cleanliness and orderliness in Kumasi, especially during periods of high cultural and social significance. The Assembly has also assured residents that adequate waste collection facilities will be available across the city to complement the efforts of participants.
As Kumasi prepares to bid farewell to one of its most influential traditional leaders, the city is poised to demonstrate its deep cultural roots, communal spirit, and reverence for tradition through this massive clean-up operation.
