The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has inaugurated Unit Committees, Sub-Metro District and Town Councils in the Bantama Sub-metro , to ensure the effective implementation of the decentralisation policy for grassroots participation in the local government system.
Hon Samuel Pyne Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive at the inaugural ceremony at Bantama SDA church auditorium at Bantama said in pursuance of grassroots participation in local governance, it was imperative that the Assembly goes through the due process to legally establish substructures, as set out in the Legislative Instrument.
He reminded members of the sub-metro that the concept was part of the decentralisation programme, which aims at putting decision making in the hands of the people, an idea, he said, the New Patriotic Party party as a party and government, upholds and cherishes.
According to him, Town Councils and constitute the third tier of the local government system, and serve as the nerve centre of sub-structures. This, he said, was due to the fact that it lay between the Unit Committees, which are the block builders, and the sub-Metropolitan councils, which are the apex of the substructures.
He urged them to take their responsibilities very serious, and without a fear or favour, advising them to work in close collaboration with the Assembly, to ensure the rapid development of Kumasi. He expressed optimism that when the sub-structures are set in motion and functional, the improvement in the development drive would be remarkable.
‘The Assembly expects nothing less than the uplifting of Kumasi within your term of office,’ he emphasised.
After the elections, Hon Isaac Kwasi Acheampong elected as chairperson Bantama sub-metro whiles Hon Kwabena Boateng also elected as Bantama Town Council Chairperson.
They were sworn into office by Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkor ,Kumasi District Court.
