KMA Deepens Community Health Education With World AIDS Day Outreach at Asafo Market

In a strategic effort to enhance public health awareness, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in partnership with the Ghana AIDS Commission, conducted a comprehensive community health outreach at Asafo Market, Kumasi, as part of activities marking this year’s World AIDS Day.

The outreach, held on Friday, focused on educating traders, shoppers, and market operators about HIV/AIDS prevention, the importance of early testing, and the adoption of safe sexual practices. Nurses from the Maternal and Child Health Unit at Pampaso led the initiative, engaging participants in interactive sessions to demystify HIV-related misconceptions and encourage voluntary testing.

In addition to HIV education, the team carried out screening for blood sugar levels, providing participants with guidance on healthy eating habits and preventive measures against diabetes. This dual approach reflected the Government of Ghana’s commitment to promoting holistic health within communities.

Madam Felicia Osei Agyemang, Deputy Director and Gender Desk Officer at the KMA, underscored the Assembly’s dedication to supporting health initiatives that empower residents with vital knowledge and access to preventive health services. She emphasized that such community-centered programmes are instrumental in reducing new HIV infections and promoting overall wellness.

Beneficiaries of the exercise expressed profound gratitude to the KMA and the Ghana AIDS Commission. Many traders and shoppers commended the initiative for bringing essential health services directly to the market, noting that it offered both valuable information and the opportunity for free health checks. One participant remarked, “I feel more informed about HIV prevention and my overall health. This programme is very important, and I am thankful to KMA and the Ghana AIDS Commission for organizing it.”

The outreach concluded with a strong appeal to the public to prioritize regular health screenings, adopt healthy lifestyle practices, and encourage peers to engage in similar health education programmes.

This exercise forms part of a broader national strategy to strengthen community health education, prevent the spread of HIV, and foster a healthier, well-informed population across the Kumasi metropolis.
