KMA Declares Metro-Wide Clean-Up Exercise on November 1

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced a comprehensive metro-wide clean-up exercise scheduled for Saturday, November 1, 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and public health across the metropolis.

According to a statement issued and signed by Henrietta A.K. Aboagye, the Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, the exercise forms part of the Government’s national clean-up campaign initiative, which aims to institutionalize a monthly sanitation day across all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana.

The clean-up exercise is expected to begin at 6:00 a.m. and will cover strategic operational zones within the Central Business District (CBD) and its surrounding communities. The operational areas include Zoo Roundabout through Pampaso to Otumfuo Roundabout, Otumfuo Roundabout through Acheamfour Market and MIN Roundabout to St. Louis College, Otumfuo Roundabout to Dr. Mensah, Boss FM, through Central Market, Asafo Interchange, and Asafo Market stretch, as well as Roman Hill Down through Aboabo Station to Alabar.

The KMA emphasized that all trading activities and vehicular movements within these areas will be temporarily suspended during the exercise to ensure the effective execution of the sanitation operation. The Assembly explained that the temporary closure is necessary to allow sanitation teams, residents, and traders to collectively participate without interference from traffic or business operations.

In her statement, Madam Aboagye appealed to market women, commercial drivers, transport unions, and residents within the affected areas to actively join the exercise and demonstrate their commitment to maintaining a cleaner Kumasi. She said the success of the exercise largely depends on the collective participation and cooperation of all stakeholders in the city.

She further noted that the exercise is designed not only to rid the city of filth but also to promote a sense of civic responsibility and environmental discipline among residents. “A clean Kumasi is everyone’s responsibility. We must all get involved to ensure our markets, streets, and drains are kept tidy,” she stressed.

The Assembly has also set conditional reopening times for shops and trading centers based on participation. If traders and shop owners actively take part in the clean-up exercise, the activity will end at 11:00 a.m., allowing normal business operations to resume. However, failure by traders and shop owners to participate will result in the continued closure of their shops until 2:00 p.m.

The KMA reiterated its commitment to ensuring a cleaner, healthier, and environmentally friendly metropolis, in line with the government’s broader sanitation and environmental management policy. It called on residents to support the Assembly’s sanitation initiatives and adhere strictly to the outlined directives to ensure a successful and impactful exercise.

The statement concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders in Kumasi to unite towards a cleaner environment, adding that sustained cleanliness will help prevent sanitation-related diseases and improve the city’s image as the Garden City of West Africa.
