KMA Calls for Public Participation as First Citywide Clean-Up Exercise Records Success
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has successfully conducted its first citywide clean-up exercise of the year, highlighting the Assembly’s commitment to promoting environmental cleanliness, public health, and civic responsibility across the metropolis.

The exercise, which covered major markets, streets, and public spaces, saw active participation from environmental health officers, waste management teams, voluntary groups, and members of the general public. The initiative is part of KMA’s broader strategy to sustain sanitation efforts throughout 2026 and ensure a clean, safe, and healthy environment for residents.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, KMA Coordinating Director, Mr. Francis Dwira-Darko, emphasized the need for collective responsibility in keeping Kumasi clean. He urged traders and residents alike to actively support the Assembly’s sanitation initiatives, noting that a clean city is vital to preventing disease and improving the overall wellbeing of the population.

Mr. Dwira-Darko expressed concern over the low participation of some traders, highlighting that while several market women closed their shops in compliance with the exercise, many failed to take part in the clean-up activities. He described this as unfortunate and called for greater involvement in future exercises.

The Coordinating Director further disclosed that the Assembly plans to review and strengthen its sanitation by-laws to introduce punitive measures for those who neglect their civic duties during mandatory clean-up exercises. He emphasized that stronger enforcement will ensure sustained cleanliness and instill a culture of responsibility among residents.

He concluded by appealing to the public to demonstrate greater commitment in subsequent exercises, stressing that the success of Kumasi’s sanitation drive depends on the active participation of all stakeholders.

The KMA has reaffirmed that sanitation remains a top priority and pledged to intensify public education, monitoring, and enforcement measures to maintain a clean, healthy, and safe environment for the people of Kumasi.
