KMA, Bloomberg Philanthropies Commemorate 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Launch Kumasi Road Safety Report 2023

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies, has marked the 2024 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims with a significant event at the Ashanti Regional CLOGSAG Hall in Kumasi. The occasion also featured the official launch of the Kumasi Road Safety Report 2023, underscoring the city’s achievements and challenges in enhancing road safety.

The program brought together key stakeholders, including the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Samuel Pyne; representatives from the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD); the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA); and Nana Yaw Akuoko, the Otumfuo Asinhene and Chairman of the Road Safety Advisory Board.

In his keynote address, Hon. Samuel Pyne emphasized the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to improving road safety in Kumasi. “Road traffic accidents are preventable, and we must all work together to adopt safer practices on our roads. The Kumasi Road Safety Report 2023 provides us with actionable data to guide our next steps,” he said. Hon. Pyne outlined several interventions initiated by the KMA and its partners, including the installation of road safety infrastructure, public education campaigns, and enhanced enforcement of traffic regulations.

Nana Yaw Akuoko, Otumfuo Asinhene and Chairman of the Road Safety Advisory Board, commended Bloomberg Philanthropies for their critical role in advancing road safety initiatives in Kumasi. He urged road users, particularly drivers and passengers, to exercise caution as the Christmas season approaches. “This period comes with increased activities on our roads, and we must remain vigilant to prevent avoidable accidents,” he stated.

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is observed annually to honor those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries in road crashes and to call for collective action to prevent future tragedies.

The Kumasi Road Safety Report 2023, launched during the event, provides an in-depth analysis of road traffic data in Kumasi, outlining key trends, challenges, and recommendations. It highlights the city’s progress in reducing road fatalities and injuries and the ongoing challenges posed by speeding, poor road user behavior, and inadequate infrastructure.

Representatives from the Police MTTD and the NRSA reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the KMA’s efforts through intensified traffic enforcement and education campaigns.

The event ended with a call to action for all road users to prioritize safety, follow traffic regulations, and adopt responsible road behaviors to save lives. Hon. Pyne reiterated that the Assembly remains resolute in its mission to make Kumasi’s roads safer for all users.

As Kumasi continues its journey toward becoming a safer city, the partnership between the KMA, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and other stakeholders serves as a beacon of hope for reducing the human and economic toll of road traffic accidents.
