KMA and Rotary Club Offer Free Breast and Prostate Cancer Screening for Asafo Market Women

In a significant effort to promote preventive healthcare and combat the growing threat of cancer, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Kumasi Premier International, has organized a free breast and prostate cancer screening exercise for traders at the Asafo Market in the Ashanti Regional capital. The initiative formed part of the global Pink Month campaign, held under the theme “Early Detection Saves Lives,” and aimed at encouraging early diagnosis while raising awareness about the dangers of breast and prostate cancer.
The exercise attracted hundreds of market women who took advantage of the opportunity to undergo free medical screening and receive vital health education from professional healthcare practitioners. The program was designed to encourage early detection, promote regular check-ups, and reduce the increasing number of cancer-related deaths in the region.

Speaking on behalf of the Kumasi Mayor, Mrs. Raiza Baba, Assistant Director at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, underscored the need for the general public, especially women, to make regular medical examinations a habit. She advised that while prayer and faith are essential aspects of life, individuals must also take practical steps to safeguard their health through preventive care and early treatment. Mrs. Baba commended the Rotary Club of Kumasi Premier International for partnering with the Assembly to deliver such a life-saving initiative and reaffirmed KMA’s readiness to continue supporting health-focused interventions that directly benefit the people.

The President of the Rotary Club of Kumasi Premier International, Mr. Avinash Lakhani, expressed the club’s strong commitment to sustaining similar health programs beyond the Pink Month celebration. He explained that the Rotary Club would extend such outreach activities to other communities within and outside Kumasi to ensure that more people benefit from early detection and proper health education. According to him, the initiative forms part of Rotary’s broader mission of promoting good health and improving community well-being through service and partnership.

Many of the market women who benefited from the exercise expressed deep appreciation to both the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and the Rotary Club of Kumasi Premier International for bringing essential healthcare services closer to them. They described the outreach as timely and impactful, adding that it had motivated them to take their health more seriously and embrace early screening practices. The successful exercise at Asafo Market once again reaffirmed the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing community health and highlighted the message that indeed, early detection saves lives.
