KATH CEO Seeks Media Partnership to Push Completion of 500-Bed Maternity Block

The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr Paa Kwesi Baido, has called on the media in the Ashanti Region to partner with the hospital to help mobilise support for the completion of the stalled 500-bed maternity block, describing the project as critical to easing pressure on the facility and improving maternal healthcare delivery.

Dr Baido made the appeal during a media soiree held in Kumasi on Thursday, December 18, 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between KATH management and the media. He noted that sustained media attention on the abandoned project would attract support from government, civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, development partners and private investors.

According to the KATH CEO, the maternity block, when completed, would significantly decongest the hospital and enhance the quality of maternal and neonatal care for patients across the Ashanti Region and beyond. He stressed that the media’s agenda-setting role makes them indispensable partners in pushing the project back into the national spotlight.

“You have the platform, and hundreds of people listen to you. As our partners in development, we will need your support to revive this important project at KATH,” Dr Baido told journalists.

He disclosed that the government has captured the maternity block project in the 2026 national budget, describing it as a strong indication of commitment towards its completion. However, Dr Baido emphasised that collective effort and sustained advocacy would be required to complement government funding and ensure the facility is completed and made operational within the shortest possible time.

“This maternity block will ease the huge pressure on KATH when completed. While government has taken a positive step by including it in the 2026 budget, we must all support the process to ensure it is completed to serve the public,” he added.

Dr Baido further assured the media of management’s readiness to operate an open-door policy, pledging transparency, access to information and regular engagement to deepen collaboration aimed at advancing healthcare delivery at the teaching hospital.

The media engagement, he explained, forms part of his broader vision to reposition Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital through strategic partnerships, effective communication and accelerated infrastructure development to meet the growing healthcare needs of the population.
