Justice Served: KMA Circuit Court Orders UMB to Pay GHS 50,000 to World Link Academy Over Loan Dispute

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Circuit Court has today delivered a landmark judgment in favor of World Link Academy, ordering the Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) to pay a sum of GHS 50,000 to the private educational institution after a protracted legal battle over a loan arrangement gone wrong.
Presiding over the case, His Lordship Abdul Razak Musah ruled that the bank had acted unjustly in its handling of the collateral provided by World Link Academy for a loan facility. The judgment comes as a major relief to the academy, which had been entangled in the matter since 2024.
Counsel for the Plaintiff, Lawyer Portia Addo from Dominion Chambers, addressing journalists after the court’s ruling, revealed that the case began when World Link Academy secured a loan from UMB, backed by collateral. However, following some complications, the bank reportedly seized the collateral under circumstances that the Plaintiff considered unjustified and aggressive.
“Our Chambers pursued this matter diligently since last year. The bank’s seizure of the plaintiff’s property was not only harsh but unlawful. Today, we are happy that the court has ruled in favor of our client and awarded them GHS 50,000 in damages. This decision sends a clear signal to financial institutions that the rights of clients must be respected,” she said.
She further noted that the court also advised the bank to desist from any further harassment or intimidation of World Link Academy, stressing that such actions undermine the sanctity of client-bank relationships.
The Chief Executive Officer of World Link Academy, Mr. Kwasi Akom, who was visibly elated after the verdict, expressed his profound gratitude to the court for upholding justice.
“I thank the judiciary for standing up for the truth. This case was not just about money; it was about fairness and integrity. I can now say I have confidence in Ghana’s judicial system. This outcome has restored my faith in the rule of law,” Mr. Akom stated.
He further expressed appreciation to his legal team and all those who supported him throughout the legal process, assuring parents, students, and staff of World Link Academy that the institution would remain focused on delivering quality education despite the recent legal distractions.
The case, which has attracted attention in the Kumasi Metropolis due to its implications on bank-client relations in the education sector, is being hailed as a victory for small private institutions seeking fair treatment from corporate financial bodies.
