“How Can Someone Who Saves Lives Not Be Saved?” – Coalition of Concerned Youth Urges Government to Address Nurses’ Strike

The Coalition of Concerned Youth (CCY) has expressed grave concern over the ongoing nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), warning that the inaction of government in resolving the crisis is directly contributing to increasing mortality rates across the country.

In a passionate appeal to government, the Executive Director of CCY, Mr. Richard Mensah, called for urgent dialogue and intervention to address the legitimate grievances of nurses and midwives, who laid down their tools on June 2, 2025, in protest over poor conditions of service.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Mensah lamented the loss of lives caused by the absence of critical healthcare professionals, stressing that every life lost is irreversible and deeply tragic. “How can someone who saves lives not be saved?” he asked. “It is unacceptable that those who dedicate their lives to caring for others are left to suffer while those in political power travel abroad for treatment at the expense of the very people they claim to serve.”

Mr. Mensah highlighted the growing inequality in the allocation of state resources, pointing out that while ministers and top officials enjoy various forms of allowances and privileges, nurses and midwives continue to battle with poor salaries, inadequate logistical support, and neglected welfare demands.

He further urged the Ministries of Health and Information to show stronger leadership and take swift action to address the situation. “The silence from the corridors of power is deafening. This is a matter of life and death. The government must stop the rhetoric and act,” he stated.

Mr. Mensah also cautioned media personnel and commentators to exercise restraint and avoid making divisive or inflammatory statements in discussing national crises such as the nurses’ strike. He emphasized the need for unity and constructive dialogue, rather than politicization or trivialization of serious national issues.

The CCY is urging all well-meaning Ghanaians, civil society groups, and traditional leaders to lend their voices to the call for the government to heed the concerns of the GRNMA. According to Mr. Mensah, the time to act is now, before more lives are lost.
