The Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly has restored hope to scores of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) after disbursing financial aid and essential support items worth GH₵100,000 to 100 beneficiaries across the district.

The presentation ceremony, held at the Assembly’s forecourt, was graced by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Kwasi Amankwaa, who reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and empowering vulnerable groups to become active contributors to the district’s development.

A Commitment to Empowerment

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Amankwaa highlighted the Assembly’s vision of building a community where individuals with disabilities are not sidelined but empowered to achieve their goals.

“We believe in creating an environment where every person, regardless of their abilities, can live with dignity and contribute to the growth of our district,” he said.

He further stressed that the support was not an act of charity but an investment in human potential, aimed at equipping PWDs to lead independent and productive lives.

How the Support Was Shared

The package was carefully structured to address different needs within the PWD community:

Business Start-up & Expansion: Thirty-five beneficiaries received GH₵2,000 each, amounting to GH₵70,000, to either start or expand small businesses. This intervention is expected to enhance their livelihoods and reduce dependency.

Educational Support: Twenty students, including those in special schools and a training college, benefited from financial assistance to ease the burden of tuition, fees, and learning materials.

Medical Support: Fifteen individuals received medical aid to cater for urgent health challenges, medications, and treatment.

Essential Items: The Assembly also facilitated the direct supply of assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, and other items to meet the practical needs of beneficiaries.

Transparency in Disbursement

Unlike past practices where cash disbursement was prone to mismanagement, Hon. Amankwaa explained that the Assembly had introduced a system of working directly with certified suppliers. This, he noted, ensures transparency, accountability, and efficient use of funds.

“We want every resource provided to reach its rightful beneficiary. That is why we chose direct engagement with suppliers rather than middlemen,” he explained.

Gratitude and Encouragement

The Chairperson of Persons with Disabilities in the Sekyere Kumawu District, Madam Regina Ampomaa, praised the government for increasing allocations to the disability fund. She also applauded the Assembly for ensuring fair distribution.

“This support comes as a great relief for many of our members. I encourage all beneficiaries to make good use of the assistance so that we can improve our livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to society,” Madam Ampomaa advised.

Beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation, with many describing the intervention as timely. A student beneficiary shared how the financial support would ease the burden of school fees, while another recipient, a petty trader, said the GH₵2,000 would help expand her small shop and provide for her family.

Renewed Hope for the Future

The atmosphere at the ceremony was filled with smiles, excitement, and renewed determination as beneficiaries left the venue with a stronger sense of belonging and dignity.

For the Sekyere Kumawu Assembly, this gesture is more than just financial aid—it is a deliberate step toward building an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of physical ability, is given the opportunity to thrive.
