Hon. Issahak Ibrahim Engages Chiefs and Community Leaders on Sustainable Mining in Atwima Mponua
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atwima Mponua, Hon. Issahak Ibrahim, has reaffirmed the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to promoting sustainable and community-focused mining as he led a strategic stakeholder engagement with traditional authorities and opinion leaders from four key communities within the district.

The high-level meeting, held on Monday, 9th December, brought together representatives from Akwaburaso, Hwidiem, Mantukwa, and Okyerekrom—communities that play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and safeguarding the district’s natural environment. The engagement formed part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to deepen collaboration with stakeholders in a district that continues to attract significant attention from both small and large-scale mining operators.

In his address, Hon. Issahak Ibrahim stressed that the mineral resources of Atwima Mponua can only contribute meaningfully to development when extraction is done legally and responsibly. He reminded participants of the destructive legacy of illegal mining, including land degradation, polluted rivers, destroyed farmlands, and the disruption of livelihoods. He emphasized that community leadership must remain vigilant and central to reversing these harmful trends.
The discussions focused extensively on developing a unified approach that ensures mining activities do not compromise the environment or endanger the lives of residents. Participants examined the urgent need to protect farmlands, preserve water bodies, strengthen compliance with mining regulations, and ensure that mining becomes a driver of progress for both current and future generations.

Adding industry perspective to the dialogue, Ms. Angela Abena Fosu, a mining concessionaire operating within the district, delivered insightful contributions on responsible mining practices. She highlighted the importance of strict adherence to environmental guidelines and safety protocols, adding that credible miners are ready to collaborate with district authorities and traditional leaders when channels for communication and accountability remain open.
Traditional authorities and opinion leaders from the participating communities expressed strong support for the Assembly’s initiative. They acknowledged the need for enhanced monitoring of mining activities and pledged to intensify community education on the dangers of illegal and environmentally harmful mining methods. Some participants stressed that Atwima Mponua’s natural wealth must be protected collectively, with every stakeholder playing an active role in ensuring responsible resource management.
Hon. Issahak Ibrahim, in his closing remarks, reaffirmed the Assembly’s determination to champion sustainable and community-centred mining. He assured participants that the Atwima Mponua District Assembly would continue strengthening collaboration among chiefs, miners, civil society organizations, and residents to ensure that mining becomes a catalyst for socio-economic development rather than a source of environmental destruction.
He added that the district aims to set a national standard by demonstrating that, with strict regulation, transparency, and strong community involvement, responsible community mining can drive empowerment, create opportunities, and contribute to shared prosperity.
The engagement ended with a renewed sense of commitment among all stakeholders to work together to safeguard the environment and promote responsible mining practices in Atwima Mponua.
