Hon. Assibey Intervenes to Restore Calm at Sofoline Transport Hub

Calm was restored at the Sofoline lorry terminal in the Kwadaso Municipality on Tuesday morning following a tense incident involving a group of individuals who attempted to seize control of the terminal’s management. The swift intervention of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Assibey, prevented what many feared could have escalated into violent confrontations.

According to eyewitnesses, the group, alleged to have political ties, stormed the terminal in a bid to displace the current leadership, sparking confusion among drivers, traders, and passengers who depend on the busy transport hub. The unexpected disruption created a charged atmosphere, leaving many unsettled as tempers flared between opposing sides.

News of the situation reached the MCE, who quickly arrived at the scene with security officers to de-escalate tensions. His presence and firm call for restraint brought the standoff under control and reassured the public of their safety. Addressing the crowd, Hon. Assibey condemned the attempt to take over the terminal outside established procedures, stressing that the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly would not allow disorder or politically motivated interference in the management of public facilities.

He emphasized that the Sofoline terminal belongs to the people and must be managed lawfully in a way that promotes peace, accountability, and the smooth flow of transportation. Hon. Assibey further announced that his office would convene a meeting on Friday with all key stakeholders, including transport operators and union leaders, to deliberate on the concerns and ensure a lasting resolution.

The intervention of the MCE was widely commended by drivers and traders at the terminal, who said his timely action prevented chaos and protected their livelihoods. Some also appealed to political actors to stay away from transport union matters, arguing that their involvement often fuels unnecessary disputes that affect daily operations.

The Sofoline lorry terminal, one of the busiest transport hubs in Kumasi, continues to play a vital role in the social and economic activities of the region. With the assurance of dialogue later this week, many residents and commuters are hopeful that peace and stability will be maintained to safeguard the terminal’s smooth operations.
