Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has openly declared his support for Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, expressing confidence that she possesses the leadership, vision, and integrity to become Ghana’s first female President.

Speaking during the Vice President’s working visit to the Ministry of Education in Accra, Mr. Iddrisu praised her accomplishments, leadership style, and commitment to service, noting that she had proven beyond doubt that she was capable of leading the country.

“It is my personal wish that you are elevated to become the first female President of our country,” he said, assuring her of his “unwavering support” should she pursue the presidency in the future.

Vice President’s Visit to the Ministry

The Vice President’s engagement at the Ministry of Education formed part of her broader nationwide working visits to key state institutions. During the meeting, she highlighted government’s efforts to improve access to education, strengthen reforms, and address challenges in the teaching and learning environment.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended the Ministry for its role in advancing education and called for greater collaboration between stakeholders to ensure that Ghana’s education system meets 21st-century demands.

Rising Popularity in Polls

Recent surveys have shown the Vice President’s growing popularity among the Ghanaian electorate and within the National Democratic Congress (NDC). A Global InfoAnalytics poll conducted in April 2025 placed her as the frontrunner with 26% voter support.

She was followed by Haruna Iddrisu at 19%, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson at 12%, while NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa tied at 10% each.

Polls Without Naana Jane Put Haruna Ahead

In a separate polling scenario where Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s name was excluded, Haruna Iddrisu emerged as the frontrunner with 27% support. He was closely followed by Mr. Asiedu Nketia at 26%, with Dr. Ato Forson placing third at 22%. Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa garnered 11% and 8% respectively.

This dual outcome reflects both Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s strong voter appeal and Haruna Iddrisu’s formidable standing within the party, setting the stage for a keenly contested NDC flagbearership race ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Political Significance

Analysts believe Haruna Iddrisu’s endorsement sends a powerful signal of party unity and respect, despite his own presidential prospects. It also highlights the growing acceptance of the idea of Ghana electing a female President, with Prof. Opoku-Agyemang at the forefront of that historic possibility.

The Vice President’s continued engagements with institutions and communities are expected to further boost her public image and consolidate her influence as a leading figure in Ghana’s political future.
