Ghana’s Human Rights and Legal Committees Begin High-Level Benchmarking Visit to UK Parliament; Kumawu MP Participates

Ghana’s legislative efforts toward strengthening human rights protection, constitutional reform, and parliamentary efficiency received a major boost on Monday as a delegation from Parliament commenced a high-level benchmarking visit to the UK House of Commons. The team includes Honourable Ernest Yaw Anim, Member of Parliament for Kumawu, who is participating as part of the Human Rights Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.

The two-day engagement, which began on 8th December 2025, forms part of an ongoing inter-parliamentary collaboration between the Parliament of Ghana and the UK Parliament aimed at enhancing legislative capacity and adopting global best practices. The strategic visit underscores Ghana’s commitment to refining its democratic processes and ensuring a stronger system of accountability and rule of law.

During the visit, the Ghanaian lawmakers are scheduled to engage extensively with their UK counterparts to examine critical areas such as human rights protection, citizen engagement, committee operations, oversight mechanisms, and constitutional review procedures. The series of interactive sessions are expected to provide practical insight into how the UK Parliament structures its legislative processes and ensures robust scrutiny of government actions.

Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim, known for his active advocacy on governance, human rights, and legal reform, highlighted the significance of the exercise. He reaffirmed Parliament’s dedication to learning from long-established democracies in order to strengthen Ghana’s legislative institutions.

“This benchmarking visit provides invaluable insight into how a leading democracy like the United Kingdom manages its committee system, shapes effective laws, and safeguards citizens’ fundamental rights,” he stated. “The knowledge we gain will directly support Ghana’s ongoing efforts to improve legislative drafting, oversight, and human rights protections.”

The visit also presents an opportunity for Ghana to deepen existing partnerships with the UK Parliament while encouraging continuous dialogue on governance reforms. Observers have emphasised that such international exchanges play a pivotal role in advancing transparency, accountability, and democratic resilience.

As Ghana’s Parliament intensifies efforts to modernize its operations and promote people-centered lawmaking, the benchmarking mission is expected to contribute meaningfully to future reforms. The insights gathered from the UK House of Commons experience will help empower committees to operate more efficiently and support the development of responsive, inclusive, and progressive national legislation.

The delegation is expected to return with a strengthened perspective on parliamentary best practices, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to building a robust democracy that protects the rights and welfare of its citizens.
