Ghana Water Temporarily Shuts Down Owabi Treatment Plant Over Technical Fault

The Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti Region has announced the temporary shutdown of the Owabi Water Treatment Plant following a technical challenge that affected one of its critical pumping systems.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the shutdown took effect on Monday, January 26, 2026, at exactly 4:30 p.m., after engineers detected a fault with the high-lift pump responsible for drawing treated water from the plant’s clear well for distribution.

Areas affected by the temporary shutdown include Asuoyeboah, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Pokukrom, Bokankye, Yankyereniase, Esaase, Awa, Maakro, Akropong, Mfensi, Tweadie, Abuakwa, Nkwakom, Nkawie, Asuobonteng, Bronikrom, parts of Mpasatia and Roben, Afari, Wioso, Abrepo, as well as surrounding communities supplied by the Owabi Treatment Plant.
Management of Ghana Water Limited assured the public that engineers are working tirelessly to address the technical challenge and restore water production in the shortest possible time. The company emphasized its commitment to ensuring reliable water supply to customers and minimizing the impact of the shutdown.
GWL expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the interruption and appealed to affected residents to remain patient while repair works are ongoing.
