Ghana to Roll Out New Vehicle Number Plates from January 2026 to Combat Theft
Ghana is set to introduce a new vehicle registration number plate system starting January 1, 2026, in a bid to strengthen vehicle security and curb the rising cases of vehicle theft across the country. The announcement was made by the Obuasi Manager of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr. Edwin Ofori, who emphasized the importance of the new system for both vehicle owners and law enforcement agencies.

Under the new scheme, vehicle number plates will no longer carry the year of registration. Instead, they will feature a regional code at the top and an area code at the end, creating a more organized and traceable identification system. According to Mr. Ofori, this format will make it significantly easier for authorities to track stolen vehicles and reduce instances of illegal vehicle transfers.

He further explained that the updated registration system will also streamline the process for vehicle owners, eliminating unnecessary delays and ensuring that vehicle information is accurately recorded in the DVLA database. Mr. Ofori noted that the reform is part of the DVLA’s broader strategy to modernize vehicle registration in Ghana and enhance overall road safety.

In urging public cooperation, Mr. Ofori called on all vehicle owners to support the exercise, highlighting that the success of the initiative depends on compliance and active participation. He also took the opportunity to remind drivers to practice safe driving habits, particularly during the festive season, by avoiding overspeeding and reckless behavior on the roads.

The DVLA’s move is being hailed as a major step towards improving vehicle security in Ghana while making vehicle registration more efficient and reliable. With the rollout scheduled for early next year, motorists and security agencies alike are preparing for the transition to a system aimed at protecting lives and property.
