Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has held a crucial breakfast meeting with all five presidential aspirants of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as part of efforts to promote unity, discipline, and cohesion within the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The high-level engagement, held on Tuesday morning, brought together key figures of the NPP, including the five aspirants who have successfully completed the internal processes qualifying them to contest for the party’s flagbearership position. The aspirants in attendance were Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central; Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Minister for Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi; H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of the Republic; Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister for Education and MP for Bosomtwe; and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former General Secretary of the Party.
The breakfast meeting, convened at the invitation of the former President, sought to provide a platform for open dialogue among the aspirants and the party’s senior leadership on matters of mutual interest, particularly concerning the welfare, stability, and electoral preparedness of the NPP.

Former President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of unity and collective responsibility in maintaining the party’s legacy and strength. He noted that while the internal contest for the flagbearer position is an essential democratic process, it must not compromise the unity and integrity that have long defined the NPP.
“Having concluded the internal processes required to make them eligible to contest for the nomination of the Party, I decided to hold this meeting to enable us deliberate, together, on issues of mutual interests pertaining to the unity, welfare, and strength of the Party in the midst of the competitive internal contest,” the former President said.

He commended the aspirants for their commitment to the NPP’s vision and democratic values, urging them to conduct their campaigns in a manner that strengthens, rather than divides, the party. He reiterated that the NPP’s greatest strength lies in its unity of purpose, discipline, and respect for internal democracy.
In attendance were key members of the NPP leadership and senior party elders, including Hon. Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu; former Chief of Staff, Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare; Chairman of the Council of Elders, Hon. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang; Acting National Chairman, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey; and General Secretary, Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong.

The meeting, which was characterized by a cordial and candid atmosphere, provided a rare opportunity for the aspirants and leadership to share ideas on sustaining party unity and ensuring a smooth transition toward the 2028 general elections.
Former President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to all attendees for honoring his invitation and for the spirit of mutual respect and camaraderie that characterized their deliberations.

“I thank the five Presidential aspirants and the leadership of our Party for honouring my invitation and for the spirit of candour and camaraderie within which our deliberations were held,” he added.

The aspirants, in turn, were reported to have expressed appreciation to the former President for his leadership, wisdom, and dedication to the NPP’s stability. They reaffirmed their collective commitment to ensuring that the internal contest remains peaceful, issue-based, and focused on advancing the party’s development agenda for Ghana.
The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts by senior party stakeholders to maintain unity and focus within the NPP as it prepares for a potentially competitive flagbearer race ahead of the 2028 polls. Political analysts have lauded the move by the former President, describing it as a timely and strategic intervention that reinforces party discipline and cohesion in an election cycle that promises to shape the NPP’s future direction.
The New Patriotic Party, which has been in power since 2017 and governed under President Akufo-Addo for two terms, remains one of Ghana’s most formidable political organizations. As preparations intensify for the 2028 elections, the outcome of the upcoming flagbearer contest is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the party’s prospects of retaining political dominance in the years ahead.
